COLUMBIA, Jan. 11, 1348.
The Legislature having appropriated the sum of
I FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, to be applied,
_ according to the discretion of the Executive, "for
r the immediate wants of the Orphans and Widows
of thoco of thf? Palmetto Resriment, who have died
^ since the commencement of the Mexican war, and
those who have become disabled in the service "
in order that those for whom it is designed, may receive
this provision as fully and as speedy as practicable,
the following named persons are appointed

the Companies that composed the South Carolina

by the 1st of March, when the fund will be apportioned,
according to the demands upon it. In the
mean time, if there should be any cases of pressing
emergency, the Commissioners will give information
as to them without delay.
Instructions more in detail will be forwarded to
the Commissioners; and it is confidently expected
that they will cheerfully use all due exertion, that
the relief provided by the State, may find its way
to the widows and orphans, and wounded of her

The 5th Regiment of 3d Brigade of Cavalry are hereby
ordered to attend Regimental Pamdc in Camden on the
19th of February next, at 10 o'eloek. A. M.. equipped for
drill and inspection. The commissioned and non-commissioned
Officers will attend Officers' drill on Friday, I8th.

An Ordinance ?
To raise Supplies for the Town ofCamdem.1.
Be it ordered by the Intendent and Wardens
of the Town at Camden, and by the authority of
the Fame, That hereafter, annually, during the
month of January in each year, the following Taxes
shall be levied and paid into the Treasury of the
Town of Camden, for the support of the govern?*
ment thereof: that is to say on all negro slaves be*
longing to citizens of the town, or livingthererifetb*
sum of fifty cenls each: to be paid by the oWner*
or anient of tha owner fif a non-resident V or htf
the person who shall hire such slave, and briojf
puch slave to reside in the said Towr.; on all negro
slaves, not being mechanics, owned by citizens of
the said town, and hired out within the said town
for a longer period than one month during the yeat,
one dollar each; on all negro slaves, not being ine*
clianics, owned by non-jesidents of the town, and
hired out to work, or who shall work in the said
town lor more than six months in each year, two
dollars; which said hist mentioned tax shall be
paid by the person who shall so hire such slaver
and bring such slave into the paid town.
2. On all negro plave mechanics, own byciti'zens
of the paid town, and hired out within the
same, throe dollars ravh; and all persons hiring
negro slave mechanics from non-residents of tbp
said town, and keeping them at work within thie
said town, for more than six months at a time, shall
pay a tax of five dollars on each of euch e'avesr3.
All negro slaves, mechanics and others, hired
out in the said town, shall be provided with a badger
lobe furnished by the Recorder of said town,on
payment of ihe foregoing taxes being made to bim^
and from and after the first day of March next, any
negro offering himself or herself for hire, or be- .
ing hired, without being provided wifh such badge,
shall he arrested and committed to Jail by the
town Marshall at the expense of the owner, until
so provided with such badge.
4. On all Goods, wares and merchandise, pn
sale in the said town, on the first day of January in
I each year, twenty cents on every hundred dollars
value thereof:

value of all town lots, Houses and Ileal Estate situated
in the said town, according to the value
thereof assessed by the Comn iasioners appointed
annually by the town council of Camden.
6. Twenty cents on every hundred dollars of
gross professional income received by any person

on the income of school masters, school mistresses*
anil ministers of the Gospel.
7. On all free negroes, under fifteen years of
age fifty cents; between fifteen and fifty years of ,
age. three dollars (?11,) over fifty years old, one

P. On all pleasure carriages drawn by two of
more horses, two dollars; on the same drawn by
one horse, one dollar. /
9 On all vehicles, wagons, carts or drays,employed
to haul for hire within the said town, for
more than one day at a time, drawn by thiee or
more horses or rnnlcs, five dollars; drawn by two
horses or mules, two dollars and fifty cents; drawn ,
by one horse or mule one dollar fifty cents: On

10. Otic-fourth ol one percent on the assessed
value of every improved or oc< upicd lot in the said
town, whereon there shall not be a good welt of
water, so that water can be drawn therefrom con*
vcniently, as a well tax; which tax shall riot exceed
four dollars to be, paid by'the owner of any

11. All persons liable to perform patrol^uty?
shall pay into the town treasury, four dollar!?; as
an exemption therefrom during the year the said
tax may be so paid:
12. All persons liable to perform read duty, shall
be allowed to commute therefor, by paying three
dollars for each person so liable.
13. Ti e owners or possessorsof dogs, who shall
have dogs within the said town on the first day of
! January in each year, or thereafter during the year,
shall pay an annual tax of one dollar, on each and
every dog so kept within the said town:
14. That all returns of property, and information
to assess taxes, shall be made on oath, to the
town treasurer; and all persons liiblc to taxation
shall give full information to the treasurer respec- ting
the property subject to taxation, when thereto
required by him.
]">. /1'hat all Ordinances and parts of ordinances, ~f
repugnant to this ordinance, be and the 6ame are
hereby repealed.
Ratified in Town Council assembled this twelfth
day of January, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty eight. As
