In pursuance of a trail made by the President of the Slate Temperance Society, the Delegates appointed by the different Temperance Societies throughout the State, assembled at the Methodist rhnrch at Greenville, at 10 o'clock, A. jM. on the 8th August, 1842. After a prayer by the Rev. C. C. Pick- j ney, the Hon. John 11. O'Neal, President i of the State Temperance Society, took' the Chair, and appointed J. M. Roberts and E. J. Arthur, Secretaries of the Convention... The President, after the organization of the Convention, delivered an eloquent address, highly appropriate to the occasion, in which he congratulated the members of the Conventton on the favorable circumstances under which they had been permited to assemble, and indications with which they were furnished of the success, and the prospect of ultimate triumph yi the noble cutcrprizc in which * they were engaged. He then proceeded ! to state; in a clear and succinct manner,! the various subjects that would necessarily demand the attention and consideration ! of the Convention, and concluded by im-! pressing upon the members the necessity1 of union and concert of action among all I who desire the prosperity of this great and moral enterprizc. A call was made by the President for the Delegates of the several Societies to present themselves, by DMriclr, at the Secretaries' table, when upwards of 200 presented their credentials, and their names were registered. The following resolution was offered by Dr. Dogan, seconded by Rev. J. M. Timmons, and unanimously adopted: Resolved, That the Presid?nt of this " Convention be requested to appoint two members to act with himself as a Committee to select proper persons to make j public addresses during the sessions oi I the Convention. The President appointed the Rev. C. C. Pickney and James A. Ashby on the | Committee. The following Resolution was offered i by Dr. Leland, seconded by Rev. Jos. < Grisham, and after some remarks by Dr. i Leland and Mr. Grisham, was unanimously adopted: . ( Resolved, That a Committee be ap- t pointed to prepare and lay before the i Convention, forthwith, a statistical rc- < port containing the names of all the Temperance Societies in South Carolina, the ] number of members in each, and the kind of pledge they severally adopt. < The following gentlemen were appoint- i ed on the Committee: Rev. A W. Le* land, Rev. J. Grisham, T. McGrudcr, t D. Lisle and Gen. D. Wallace. L. i Kennedy, was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That a Committee be appoin- i ted to prepare a statement of the principles and designs of the Convonti ?n in their efforts to promote the cause of Temperance, utterly disclaiming all political ri" - combination and dependence upon Legislative aid.
