AGRICULTURAL. 'f Utility or Select Seeds.?Mr. Gaylord, in ilie Albany Cullivator very justly remark?, "that trie seed that ripens first in tfie ear, and is separated with the greatest ease, is the most proper for seed, as these circumstances show it is the most mature. A farmer in one of the Northern Stales a few years since, was in the habit of s?*llin?r large quantities of seed wheat annually and at high prices, as his wheat was of a | superior quality, very heavy and produc-i live, and supposed to be a new variety.? I It appeared however, that he had brought, "his wheat to that degree of ;>ci diction, by eelectinrr some of the finest heads from a field in the first place, and then instead of threshing the whole crop, and using the seed promiscouslv, he generally beat the sheaves over a barrel, by which only the best and most perfect grains were seperated, and by repeated sowing had rendered the qualities so desirable, permanent." . It is reasonable to believe every kind of seed may be improved by a similar process of selection. FRUIT TREES. * The practice of draining, so necessary , fir the well being of every species ofvege-1 tables, is found of superlative importance < to orchards having unhealthy subsoils, the 11 presence of which is easily shown by moss\ growing on the branches and a coarse and i open bark. The Boston Cultivator states, 1 that a Mr. Phinny Ins found by experi- 1 ence that the water in a rctent.ve subsoil 1 ? < initiriniic t>? t!if> trrowih of his trees -f as to justify the expense of ditch s cut from two fo three feet denpto caryoff ihe ' water, which collecting in the subsoil, para- ' lyzed and corrupted the tender roots. At the bottom of thes.? drams is left a watercourse about eight inches deep, covered . with, flat stones; on these some brush is f thrown, and the whole is filled with the earth that has been dug out in forming the drains. Thus has he secured the most entire success on land that before had baffled'all his attempts to raise an orchard. A periodical limiting is of the greatest j' benefit to an orchard; so also is the washing of the trunk and branches of the trees jj t with strong soap-suds, which also might! be applied to their roots, opening tho|r ground for the purpose. Pruning should be attended to, and practiced annually. #! sparingly at first, or groat injury may arise ^ from the infliction of large wounds and t he M exposure of the trees to violent winds du- a ring winter, beiore the yonng wood had shot forth to protect them. h MEAL vs. GRAIN. The question is often ask?'d "Which is the best for neat stock, meal or corn?" j i For our own part, we believe that meal is not only best but much the best. 1 \ As a general thing, our farmers do not appear to bo sufficiently aware of the. iin- 11 portanco of grinding their grain for stock, 0 instead of feeding it out to them whole, as is still the custom with many, and especi- 0 ally with those who have never had expe- " riencc in feeding stock on gram D3tn wnoie j and ground. It has now been several years since we first became confidently persuaded that one bushel of corn, ground, is worth more for fattening stock, than five pecks that is not: and this we think will be the necessary conviction of every one who experiments in order to ascertain the relative value of the two. * We have never taken the trouble of experimenting correetly in this matter. s and we confess that our opinion is predic- ? able simply upon the testimony of farmers generally, and in connexion with our own observations, casualty mane, ami without any idea of arriving, for our own part, at any tiling like an accurate result. The fact, however, is obvious, we think. 1 that the waste resulting from the practice! of feeding grain to cat'le whole is, gener-1, ally speaking, far more than sufficient to I, " defray the expenses of grindirg; a large, i I* proportion of it being unconirninuted, and i consequently passing through thecompli-| caie mechanism of the stomachc without contributing, in any way, to the animal's | support. Corn is often found in considerable, quantities in the excrements of all n?*af 'stock, and in the full retention of all its vital properties by which it is distinguished in its perfect state, that is, before passing through the animal's maw. We are now engaged in a series of experiments which we think will ultimately be successful in leading to a correct appreciation of the relative value of each, and the result of which, so soon as the series shall have been sufficiently extended, we shall communicate without delay. W. Farmers Journal. Swellinos.?To scatter swellings on horses or other cattle, take two quarts or proof whiskey, or other proof sprits, warm it over coal, but not to blaze; dissolve in it a pint of soft soap. When cool, put it in a bottle, and add one ounce of camphor. When dissolved, it will form a liquid opodeldoc; and is then ready for application, forming a cheap and useful remedy. ' When the swelling is on the 1 g, or any part that will receive a bandage, suc.h bandage should be applied and wet with the opodeldoc. Ib. , V/--,8TATE OF SOUTH-CAROLINA, i LANCASTER DISTCTR1T.
