We bad the unhappiness to see a sight on Tuesday, which is unfortunately too common?the possessor of a fine and well cultivated mind, debased to a condition below that of the brutes that perish. Wc suppress names, because that he has friends whose feelings are tremblingly acu'te to ins disgrace; and because the man himself in his lucid intervals, is pain-| luJiy senstoie oi trio condition 10 wmcu ne, lias reduced himself. It is unnecessary to say that 'to is a slave to lite bottle. Willi a face bruised by contact with some obstruction in his dubious progress; with a coat torn nearly frotn his body, and other parts of his attire dismantled, a hat beaten in, dirty linen, and his whole person smeard w ith the mud in which he had been rolling, walked a man, who, but a short lime ago, had thousands hanging upon the words, as they fell from his lips. He has been a popular lecturer, is a close reasoncr, and an elegant writer. L lie has commanded the csleetn and rcW sped of thousands; and there^are those living, whom no persuasion, short of that of the evidence of their own eyesight, would convince that he is the fallen creature which we have seen him. lie has been accustomed to, and might still move in the best society?he prefers the debasement of intoxication. Even in his degraded condition, he seemed to us no less than a master spirit ruined. His intellectual countenance gave an impressive idea of the capacity of the gifts thrown by him unheaded away; as blackened ruins denote the size, and inti male the magnificence of the building of which they arc lite wreck. Mail Robber caught.?A young follow named John Sasseen, who had been for some time past, deputy postmaster at Morristown, in Jefferson county, Tonnessee, on the Stage Line between Knoxville and Jonesborough, was arrested a fortnight ago, on a charge of stealing money front the mail. The mail, it appears, was opened by Sasseen, at Morristown, both goingand returning, at night, and as the postofficc was in a small store building, he had a fine opportunity to feel for interesting letters?and it is understood that he has frequently thrown aside packages addressed to Knoxville and other places, from the mail, for more particular examination than the legal time for detaining the mail allowed him. The loss of several letters from the IJ inks in Knoxville to gentlemen in Jonesborough, containing money, induced the postmaster at Jonesborough, Dr. Chester, to make a secret but thorough investigation in relation to these thefts, which resulted i:i the complete detection of young Sasseen. Or' C. prepared a cunning decoy package for the rogue, and with a mail key in his pocket, set out to follow and watch the j package. He was accompanied l>y a meicliant of Jnnesborough, on this secret j mission, and after passing each office on the route, together they examined the mail. Alter passing Sassccn's office, the package was found?not to be in the mail! 1 Another decoy-letter was prepared at 1 Knoxville for the returning mail, and its similar disappearance at Morristowo 11 x- j' ed the crime fully upon Sasscen. lie is j1 now in prison at Knoxville, awaiting his trial at the next session of the District Dourt. Dr. Chester is entitled to much praise both from the community and the post-office department for his zeal and vinlancc in ferreting out the mail thief. 9 ?
