Mr. Gowers, assistant light-house engineer, will be here in a few days to select si?es for range lights for Port Royal harbor. This is the fijst truits of the recent visit of the naval officers to this place and the decision to cicct these lights is confirmatory of the report that a naval station will be established here. Mr. Harms announces to-day his readiness to supply the young people with toys and other Christmas goods. A colored man was shot and killed at Levy's X Iton(is Inst Saturday night. Tin . .particulars are not yet at hand Mr. George Gage has taken the .agency of the Millville Fire and Marine Insurance Company, and his advertisement appear! to-day. The assets of this company art large and its terms will be as reasonabh as the risks will admit. Competition in the insurance business in Beaufort cannot but be beneficial to our citizens. The County Commissioners met Monday evening. Tlte only business befort tlie board was the approval of the bonds of S. J. Bamptield, Esq , as clerk <d court and William Wilson as sheriff". The bondsmen of Mr. Bamptield are George Holmes, J. W. Collins and B. A. Scheper. Mr. Wilson's bondsmen are Mrs. M. A. Wilson and J. E. Boycc. A fatal accident occurred hi P >rl R <v al last Saturday evening resulting in the death of a young man named Robert Kerwin, an employee of the Port Royal Railroad, Kerwin and nth its with ong iged in running sonic car* laden with cotton into the yard of the Port Royal Compieasing Compauy and as there were no brakes on the cars the deceased got a stick of timber to u*c as a chock which, when the cars struck it, flew up and striking him on the head knocked him insensible. When Kcrwiu's comrades found he did not rally from the effects of the blow tlicy carried him to the council chamber but while entering the house he expired. Dr. Johuson held an inquest on the remains but several of the jury refused to sign the verdict unless the Railroad company was censuiod for not 7 providing brakes for their cars. Kerwin was a native of New York and is represented as being a faithful and efficient laborer An effort is being made to get up meetings to denounce Myers and Hamilton and demand that th<y resign their goats in the legislature on account f their having joined the Iccril hod v. It is ii.itie?.il?lp however, that those favoring these imlig nation meetings are aspirants for the vacancies that would thus be made. The people generally care only to have an end put to the disgraceful proceedings of the bogus house. The ItuAnlun Fleet. If the foreign dispatches are to be credited, we are likely to, receive a visit in Ainericau waters of a Russian fleet. The story may prove, however, to lack confirmation. An unauthenticated rumor recently appeared in some of the Continental newspapers that the Russian Mediterranean squadron has been ordered to America. The St. Petersburg correspon dent of tho Times, in a letter to that journal, says : "On Monday, Novenilr?r 9th. Mr. Boker, the American Minister to Russia, was suddenly informed that the Czar desired to see him. As it is unusual for diplomatists below the rank of Amhassndur 1?? oilmin.-i ? kuuhucu iu such audiences, every imaginable rumor was circulated as to what passe 1 between the Czar and the American Minister. Although ? . the truth has not officially transpired, I -i believe the Czar's object was simply to beg Mr. Bolter to communicate to President Grant the fact of the departure of the Russian Mediterranean squadron for America." There is no doubt that the squadron has suited, and although the position ot a commander of a naval force ordered to seek refuge in foreign portion the eve of war cannot be enviaule, it is difficult to see what else Russia could do< as even the Turkish navy alone would be sufficient to dispose of any ships which - Russia could bring into action.
