B. lthctt jr. has taken editorial control of the Charleston Journal of Commerce, and advocates of a straight out fight will tind in him a valuable champion of their cause. Under Col. Ithett's guidance the Journal will be aggressive and if the course indicated in has salutatory is followed out he will be able to assist in reorganizing his party on advanced grounds and possibly leading it on to victory next November. in spite of the intense heat a large audience witnessed the exercises of the children at the Tabernacle Church last Wednesday evening, and all expressed themselves as delighted with the exhibition. ? Crosse and Illackwells Table Suit in Jars at Roiieiit'b. Judge Reed has appointed W. MEETiNO.-The adjourned | school meeting was held at the. council chamber last Saturday, a very slim attendance. The trustees made their annual report as follows: Local tax collected $1,500,68 State appropriation 1,873,22 Total $3,873,90* Paid ^packers salaries $3,340,12 " for books 42,13 " Incidentals 444,04 total 3,820,29. Leaving a deficiency of $131,39. The report of the trustees was exam-! iued by a com nittee appointed by the! chair and reported correct. The trustees submitted a resolution levyiog a school tax of tli.ee mills for Btuuf- rc towmbip which w.is adopted. The question ot mixed school was then discussed for nnir I..,: n""UU,?UJ ?"?S! gained by the advocates of separate schools for white and black. The trustees seem willing to do what they can to meet the wishes of the parents of white children, but even if they so desired the law would prevent the schools being classed as wished for by some of our citizens. We are assured that satisfactory schools will be open next year for all, and it is poor policy to bring up the question of race at the school meetings, especially so long as the trustees of "this township are so willing to meet the wants of the taxpayers by every concession that could be reasonably asked for. The Fourth was a gala day in Beaufort. In the early morning the drowsy patrio! j was awakened uy the' booming of cannon on the fleet, nnd reminded sonic of similar sounds a dozen years ago. The town was gay with flags mid the irrcprcssiolc drummer did his best to disturb the morning nnil as u nap was impossible I the people were soon on the street, all wanting to know what was to be seen and heard. The girls nnd women from town and country with their gayest apparel ma le the streets present a lively scene and rejoicing the hearts of the stage drivers who anticipated a rich harvest. A large trade was done by our merchants and nothing of importance occurred during the day. In the afternoon the militia were called out and seven nun with muskets seemed to be all that was left of the regiment that used to parade our streets. A political meeting in the | afternoon was addressed by several of! our prominent politicians, and a small i display of fireworks after dark ended 1 the d >y. ^ Mr. It. C'?. Pluming, superintcndant of the I'urt lioyul Railroad, invited several Augusta gentlemen to accompany liim on n visit to the fleet yesterday, and tliey arrived at Port J loyal on the afternoon train, 'i he ships on this day it was supposed would present greater uttraetions and the strangers would also enjoy the novelty of seeing a national salute tired. Mr. Fleming's party was increased on the way to about twenty-rive including several members of the Beaufort Bar, railroad officials, half a dozen citizens of Iloaufort, ami one gentleman who has a i son, with tlic rank of lieutenant, in the: navy. The party secured the launch j Falcon and steamed down the river to the monitor Lehigli, whose officers on the approach of tho launch retired to their quarters until the party left. As some expressed a desire to visit the New Hampshire the launch went up to her gangway but a subaltern warned them off. Mr. Fleming then inquired of an officer ?n deck if the party could not go aboard but although las question was repeated tluve limes no one lull the civility or the authority to give htm an answer, and 11 icturn to Port Itoyal became a necessity, alt hough after they had stinted Mr. I). C. Wilson was seen to wave his hat for tiie boat to return. Mr. Fleming and liis guests, sonic of whom had entertained the officers recently in such handsome style in Augusta, were rightly incensed at. the treatment received and declined to turn back. A dance on hoard the New Hampshire is the only excuse that can be given for thc'actions of the officers who, under the circumstances, wanted the ship all to tlicnfsclvcs. Kiln Dried Yellow Meal at Robkrt's The State treasurer announces that in consequence of the payment of a large proportion of taxes in bills of the State, made receivable for taxes by a decree of the United States Supreme Court, there is but $25,000 iu the StateTrcasury available to pay the $73,000 of interest on the consolidated bonds, there being a deficit of $18,000 to be provided lor by the Legislature next November. ??? A correspondent of the News and Courier in Ihirnwell asserts his belief that appeals for help have become outrageous He says that in llarnwell county if there is any suffering for want of food that it comes, in ninety per cent, of the cases, from idleness, drunk ennci-s or dishonesty. L'niployment can be had by any industrious person white or black, at fair wages, and he warns the public against the appeals of those who do not deserve help. There is more money already levi al and collected than the teachers can get. We are opposed to levying or collecting any more money for schools till tliat already collected has been accounted for. The cry is always "levy and collect," but never do you hear a voluntary invitation, "come and get your money." When the teachers-except a favored lew, who are iu the ring-get unything at all, it is after they have waited and pinched themselves along for months after their money was due; and they get it in driblets; and even these dri' lets are paid out with all the agonies and reluctance with which a man submits to the pnl'.ing out of an eye-tooth.-Edgefield Adver tiscr.
