part of the scheme of Bristow for making
political capital. Mr. Grant agrees
with hiiu and will aid him as ho did
BabcocK in escaping a conviction.

that Mr. J. W. Collius was the lucky recipient

At the annual meeting of Washington
Bteam Fire Fngice Co., held last evening
the following ^otiicers^were elected for
the ensuing year: J. P. Boyce, lorunan;
J. II. Harrison, assistant foreman; W. II.

urer, and J. E McGregor, engineer.
Several venders of dry goods have

inevitable soap man bangs out his lamps
and seduces the unwary into buying his
worthless stuff

that was stolen from him about two weeks !

Mr. Whippcr has resigned his scat as
a representative in the general assembly
for Beaufort county, the resignation to
take effect at the close of the Bcssion.
This step was necessary to take in order
to Inake himself eligible for the position
of judge of the second circuit as it is
unconstitutional for him to hold the
two,positions at the same time.
What we are to do for hotel accommodations
when the whole fleet arrives is a
serious question. The 8ea Island Hotel
and Dr. Warren's Club House are full,
nod wi'h an anticipated crowd of ladies,
to nay nothing of men who will accompany
the vessels, it will be impossible to
find shelter for all.
The county commissioners hare upper
tioned the money to be received from the
throe mill tax as follows:

The board wa3 in session Monday afternoon
and all day yesterday and succeeded

It was thought at one time yesterday

The question came up as to the troas- 4
urer's authority to pay the teachers '
certificates due them ftom the money 11
released from the injunction m the suit of 4
the Frcedmcn's Bank. Mr Jlolmes
thought that owing to the order of the' j
i Judge it was a question whether he was l
1 authorized to pay the certificates or
| whither the county commissioners should
i draw checks for the amounts. Tl.o
matter was therefore postponed until
I .Judge Maher could decide the question.

The board of Pilot Commissioners met
on Monday evening; present J.C. Richmond,
chairman and Cnpt. Ilatchinson
ana ^apc. xoung. The investigation <
into the charges against Capt. Samuels 1
was poBt-poned until the next meeting,
March 15th. The application of Abra- ]
ham Onsey for a twelve foot branch was '
refused, a six months further service
being necessary. Capt. \V. S. Cox having
passed a satisfactory examination
was given a full branch for the Port
Hoyal bar. Mr. Kressel, owu<r of pilot
boat No. 2 appeared unci complained of
pilot Dupong having appropriated the <
whole amount of pilotage earned while '
attached to his bout, and hoped the 1
board would take sonic action to protect
owners of boats as well as pilots, which was
received as information to be considered
at the next meeting. The application of
C. C. Neil for a full branch for St lleleua
and Port Royal was refused. The application
of John O'Brien for a licence waslaid
over till?the next mooting when he will

restraining the board from paying
over to pilot Alston certain disputed
pilotage money w?a considered and the
money awarded to Alston. Two pilots
came up to the Captain's uflicc and settled
their monthly dues.

I the school. Candidates must be fifteen
years ot age and should bring certificates

or more responsible citizens.

That on and after the passage of this ordinance
It sli ill be unlawful for any storekeeper or other
person to c^poi-c or offer for r-nle fresh meat of
any klnl except nt the market under such regulations
a-may now be estahlised or hereafter to be
established, '-Peddling or hawking of fresh meats
or other produce dcterinental to the true intent
and meaning of the ordinance regulating the
market shall be puul-dicd by fine, or imprisonment
or both, in the descrction of the Inteudant or
nonr.eil,

killed or Slaughtered any animal Intended tobe
sold within the limits of the Town, tbey siinll be
authorized to sell thoeamo after the same has been
offered to butchers holding stalls in the market
who have refused to offer or give a reasonable
