WEDNESDAY. NOV. 24. 1873
f^TThe county commissioners will
meet next Monday.
tjfThe Pilot Boy Inn returned to the
line between Georgetown and Charles
ton.
237~W. J. Jenkins and T. M. Crofut,
I of Be aufort, have been drawn as jurors!
for the January term of the U.S. couit
in Charleston.
Mr. John Munctt has brought
from New* York, for his own private use,
a very handsome sloop of 12 tons called
llic,Quickstep.
' ttf'The telegraph informs us that the
Secretary of the Navy will recommend
ilie < Btiil lidmient of a small Naval Stn1
lion at l'ort U< yal.
Pf riic chief constructor of the Navy
Department arrm d in lieaufort last week.
I We hear that his object is to thororghly
inspect the Dictator pJcparntory to lur

According to the figures of the
Oharh ston Keirs Renut ort county for the
ten years to come will be entitled to six
representatives in the general assembly.
W e now have seven.

Jos. M. Williams Esq. has rcmoved
to Aikcir where he will continue
his practice, and hope* the climate will
he of benefit to bis health. Mr. Wil
' IiainshnR the gn??d wishes of all who
* know him for his success in his prolVssi??u.
53TT 'he Georgetown Time* complains
I hut there has not been a conviction in
the court there for a week, and attributes
this resu't to the tact that there was
not a white man on the jury. In this
county the cob ri <1 juror is quite as ready
to convict as the white man, and their
verdicts are general y just.
tffTbcie is a dearth of politicians in
our town just now owing to the meeting
of the legislature. Sheriff \\ ilson and
George lIolmt-8 left last Saturday and the
next day the exodus was very great, the
departures embracing men of all ranks
from the expectant porter to the Lieutenant
Governor. Congressman Smalls
accompanied the crowd, but. returns this
week to prepare for bis departure for
"Washington, where he will be accompanied
by his daughter Lizzie.
A very serous smash occurred oa the
C. C. and A. Railroad la^t Thursday,
owing to n train of empty cars tunning
jnto the rear of a passenger train that was
on a side track waiting for another train
to pass. One child was killed and uiany
other passengers injured, and ihe wonder
is that more were not killed as the cngiue
ran half way through the ladies car splitting
it in two. Gov. Chamberlain was
on the traiu but escaped uninjuricd.
"Wasiiinoton, November 22.?The Vice
President elied very suddenly at 7.30 this
morning. He rested well last night, and
awoke at 7 o'clock, and expressed himself
as feeling bright anil better- He sat
up in bed to take bis medicine, and lay
* down on bis left side and expired in u
* few moments without a struggle.
