them up and fry them in a pan with but

meg have been added. Afterward pou
some areata overthem, and simmer then
in it until ready for use.
Pie Crcst.?The most healthy pi
crust is made of thin, sweet cream am
dour, ?viyi a little salt. Do not kueai
thin. Bake in a quick oven. Anothe
way is to sift a quart or two of flour ii
the pan. Stir in the center a little sal
and naif a tcaspoouful of soda well pul
verized. Now put in the hole a cup o
soft?not liquid lard, or butter and lar<
. mixed, stir it thoroughly with the flour
next add two scant cups of good sou
milk or buttermilk. Stir all quickly wit!
the flour, in such a way that you neec
hardly touch it with your hands till yoi
can roll it out. Bake quick. This wil
make three or four pies. '

Orchard and Nuraery.
Early varieties of apples and pear
must be marketed as soon as ripe; and t
bring the highest price, they should b
carefully picked unci iissort6d. T?]pr
are quantities of fruit brought into max
ket every fall, which is so poorly packet
and assorted that it will not sell for tin
oost of the crates, while that of trans
portation is a loss to the raiser. It can
not be too often repeated that good frui
will bring a good price, even when th<
market is glutted with poor stuff. Thos<
who throw out all inferior fruit, ant
pack only the best, putting this up s<
carefully that there will be no rolling
about or bruising in transportation or h
handling, find fruit-growing profitable.
Home markets are too often over
looked, and large towns and villages ii
fruit districts are often poorly supplied
the growers thinkingit necessary to sent
their fruit to New York and other largi
cities. Those who have cultivated tin
home markets, and keep them regularl;
supplied, have found it profitable ; frnit
can be delivered in a riper condition thai
when packed for a distant market.
Drying fruits is an imnortanfc indn?t.n
in many sections of the country, espo
cially in the line of peaches and apples
The quicker the fruit is dried thebnghte:
it will look. It is commonly spread 01
boards and taken in every night; thii
makes a great deal of work, and for smal
lots a glass frame like a hot-bed, witl
holes in the sides, covered with win
cloth, answers a good purpose. When
large quantities are dried, recourse mus
be had to some of the patent fruit dryen
now in use.
Budding may be performed whenever
well matured buds can be had, and tin
bark of the stock lifts easily. Direc
tions have often been g von togethe:
with illustrations to explain the process
so that a novice can succeed after a littli
practice.
Prepare a stock of labels for use when
ever needed. Bed cedar is most durabl<
whether to tie on or use in the soil as i
" stick " label. They are made by ma
chinery and are quite cheap. They an
smeared with white lead or chrome yel
low in oil before writing.?Agriculturist
Unefnl Hints.
Do not kill the toads. In Paris the]
are sold at fifty oents a dozen, in orde:
to protect vineyards and gardens fron
insects. A toad will swallow the bigges
kind of a tomato worm.
To destroy chinch bugs, put old piece
of rag or carpet in the crotchea nf th.
trees attacked. When the worms spin
as they will, in the rags, throw the lattei
in scalding water. The bags can thui
be killed by wholesale.
Common coal oil is an excellent mos
qui to bar. Drop a little on a piece o
cotton, squeeze as dry as possible, am
rub over the exposed portions of th<
bodv. The smell of the oil disappear
in about five minutes, and no mosquife
will alight upon the anointed places
This Ik said to be better than pennyroya
essence for the same purpose.
