" The poison resides in the fluids of the l( bug, And can be acquired by innoculn- p tion through cuts or braises, or by inhalation of its fumes in the process of v burning or scalding, or from simply i, crushing it. - : n The effects of the poison are rapid in t, their action, beginning with a violent j fever, or alternate fever and chills with ^ clammy and sweat; the faoo becomes 0 bloated and red; the eyes protrude; de- n lirium sets in; sometimes vomiting of a c dark, acrid fluid; the pulse is rapid. n Later the whole body begins to swell, y the pulse becomes weak, an irresistible c stupor sets ii\ and unless relief is pro- c cured, death follows. On examination, ? the blood is found in a disorganized t state, and as is the case in snake poison- j ing, is incoagulable. t In all cases, where the bug is collected f or crushed by hand, the hands should j be rubbed with moist earth, and after- A wards washed with strong soap and f water, and in no case should the hand j be uncovered, while picking, if cut or e bruised. t In a case of poisoning, determined by B the sjrmptoms as given above, the first c stepk ?to destroy the poison, as far as f we can. If communicated by a wound c in the hand or other part, by first thor- ? oughly cleansing, followed by frequent t applications of weak lye. r For interned treatment, as an antidote, B diluted vinegar, a teaspoonful every half , hour, and the inhalation of the fumes of ( hot vinegar. If a sudden or alarminc nrostrstion . seta in, am mourn, or alcohol in some form, should be used. In all cases, as soon as possible, send for a physician, as the disease is liable to take a typhoid direction, if not immediately fatal. Heed PctatoM, J. M. Morris, Waterloo, N. Y., says: My experience has been that it is much better to cut potatoes lengthwise than across, and that the stem end will produce a more even sized potato than the seed end. The seed end is more likely to prodnoe spindling stock and therefore more small potatoes. That the seed end will prodnoe nothing but small potatoes, as some have undertaken to prove, is not the case, as I have a number of times proven by actual experiment. But I nave not yet seen the time that the stem end would not produce the best results. As to cutting the potato to one eye to a piece, I find it will only answer on good rich ground like a gardsn, and will not do for general field planting. . Snakeskla Shoes. The Winchester (Kj.) Journal says: t We sew hi this town s nice pair of shoes, r the Tamps of which were made of rattle- a sake hide, and the quarters of chicken- * lake hide. Also several snake hides c neatly tanned, and three feet long and ' eight inches wide. They belonged to i. H. Henderson, who lives on " Big I Goon," in Jackson county, Ala. He c makes a specialty of eatohing all kinds a of snakes, rattle snakes in particular, 1 and, without injuring or killing them, t hikes off their hides. These he tans in L about two months, and then makes into 1 shoes. He used a weed, which grows a in the mountains, to " mesmerize " the c snakes. t AMONG TIIE WHAUF RATS. 'be Poor Wretchn Who IIooil the River Front*. "What is a 4 wharf rat' and where is e to be found ?" I asked one day of "an Id and experienced police captain who ad seen twenty years' service wearing lie blue uniform, and was well acqaaintd with all the habits and haunts of the utcasts and criminal classes. 44 A 4 wharf rat,'" he answered, 44 is omething entirely different from all thers of those who defy or evade the iw. His home is on the docks, and he i only to be found on the most lonely tid least frequented city piers. How e lives and gets his food and clothing is > any one woo does not know the great ty a curious problem, and a startling ot when analyzed. You have often rolled along the docks, perhaps, at I irly morning ?" " Occasionally I have visited some of te docks at an early hour to get a reatli of fresh air on a summer morng," I answered. '* Well," he oontinued, " if you go irly enough you may see here and thero wretched looking man in soiled clotli? sleeping behind n hay bale, a pile of neks, or a stack of lumber. His hair ill be full of straw or hay, and his face id skin are of the color of clay, sullen id destitute of any high expression, ocosionally you see an overgrown boy ; the same description, but the scamp is >t yet fixed ineradically in his face of ^gradation and indifference to all things iman and divine. Perliaps you may id some of these people fishing off the id of a wooden stringpiece, or off some hooner, but that is all pretense, and irves as a cover for theft or laziness, [asters of vessels, schooners and liglits have to watch carefully for these Uows, or they will steal and got away ith their plunder quicker than a lightng flash." " Are they in any way oonnected with 10 class known as river thieves ?" I iked. " It is a fact that the majority of tho ver thieves?the most skillful and exart among them?are recruited from le dock or wharf rats. Of course, such ien as the Bay Ridge burglars, who ere shot, do not and could not have longed to this class. Those fellowB ere bold and determined men, who alnys fought for a heavy stake, and they ould despise themselves if they were mnd lying out all night merelv to se ire a pieoo of old junk, a coil of rope, r even a piece of old iron, copper or lock lead. I believe that these are the lings taken principally by the dock its, as they are easy to conceal, and lipmosters or shipowners do not care > go to unnecessary trouble to prosecite in cases where the loss only amounts 1 detached instances of from fifty cents i five dollars. On the Bast river side, round Burling slip and in that neighorhood, there ore to be found crowds f wliarf rats, weather beaten old fellows rho have done nothing since boyhood ut sleep on docks and hong around like tiarks for any eatable offal in the way of ecayed pineapples, grapes, oranges or ther fruit that may be cast aside on the ocks from coasting or West India vesels." " Can nothing bo done with these fel)ws ?" I inquired. " Can they not be ut to some use in society ?" " Nothing can bo done with them rhatever. They are a hopeless, sliiftiss lot of wretches, whose utter insigificauoo prevents the law from dealing oo severely with them, and they are so irty, reckless and lazy as well as dislonust that they are tit for nothing; as me of these told me himself one day in , fit of despair, only to be made manure >f. I suppose that there may be probibly 2,500 or 3,000 of these fellows, joys and men, who come under the head >f dock rats in this city. When winter somes they cannot sleep on the docks as i matter of oourse, and then they have o seek shelter in the police station louses, wondering from one to another, light after night, withont hope or care or anything. But it is strange that even n midwinter, if you should choose to ralk down to the* river fronts, you will Ind some of these rats hanging around, umnting the place where he spends his inmmer vacation, for it is vacation all he year around to him, and probably ome charitably disposed woman on a anal boat, or some mate of a coasting or oreign schooner will give feim a piece >f bread and meat and some potatoes for Loing an odd chore, such as sweeping up he deck, or the like, or for going Co narket to get some meat or other provilions for a voyage; that is, if the dock at will take to the work, which he generally does not. ]|pould cite numerous instances where food boys, who were wont to be regular n their attendance on school, and obedi;nt to father and mother, have been mined finally by their being seduced by )lder and more vicious companions to risit the docks to idle away a day, and inally to spend night after night awav 'rom their homes, and at last they tarn >ut to be nothing but confirmed young slackguards and hardened thieves and sriminals. And for that reason I am greatly in favor of the truant law, which nakes it oompnlsory for children to attend school, and thus they are kept iwav from the docks and the depravity >f these associations and bad company. [ found in a boy's pocket ory night, and vho had only been absent from school a ew days for the first time in his life, 1200 in $10 bills, which he had taken mt of a drunken man's pockets who had ?<Ae to sleep on the duck in a stupor of in consciousness. I took him home to lis parents, and found the man who ?wned the money. The lad was only ileven years of age, and had been inluced to rob the drunken man by a contained wharf rat older than himself, who J u;i. at-.
