WHITEWASH.
The moat perplexing duty the recent
convention hud to perform was to endorse
the actions of the county treasurer, as it
was well known beforehand that it Was
to be forced to do so, and the question
was how to bring the delegates from the
rural districts up to the scratch. As they
were entirely ignorunt of the workings ol
the treasurers office, and moat of them
were not aware that a majority of their
representatives in the Assembly were at
odds with the first honest Administration
of the State since the war, it was decided
to hitch an approving clause of the treasurers
course, on a resolution giving a lnkew
arm endorsement of Gov, ChamberlainAlfred
Williams was selected as best fitted
to draw up a paper intended to exonorate
the treasurer, annihilate the Tribune
and wind np with a weak approval of

tlie following resolutions which were
declared the sense of the convention.
Whereas, certain charges hnve been made
sgninst Geo. Holmes, County treasurer as
n the manner of conducting the afiairsof
Jris office, and whereas, the Beaufort Tiu
i.pkk has pretended to publish certain
statements and figures pertaining to the
t ffice of County treasurer of Beaufort,
which we believe to be exaggerated, tortured
and incorrect in every particular,
ihat could effect the character and reputation
of a faithful.and honest official,
?nd .whereas, it is rumored that these
ftntements are to be used to the detriment
and removal of the present County
treasurer; Therefore: Be it Resolved, bv
the Republicans of Beaufort county assembled;
That it is the firm conviction of
the members < f this convention that Geo.
Holmes^ County tr? nsurer, has discharged
the duties of his office with honesty, efficiency,
and to the brst interests of the
oounty and 8tate, and therefore ought to
Teceive the commendation of all good
-eitieena.
Resolved: That we heartily endorse the
<efforts of Hon. D. H. Chamberlain to give
to the people of the State honest and
.good government and that we pledge our
selves to support each and every act of
the chief Executive in the work of reform.
Resolved: That bis Excellency D. H.
< hauibcrlain be requested to forward all
wuarges or complaints against the official
conduct of county treasurer or other officers
to the Grand Jury to meet at the June
" term ot court for investigation and that
if such charges be sustained the officer or
? fiicere be hr.medidately removed.
But for the Adors* ment of Holmes, the
<3ovcrnor would have been ignored entirely.
Thos. E. Miller offered the following
resolution which Was opposed by
<3reen. Reed and Hamilton, and defended
l>y Miller and Myers but IMIhams' sul>-fctit
ltu triumphed.
lletolvcd: That we diem this a fitting
occasion to reiterate the sentiments and
pledges advanced and adopted Oct. 1874
in lavor of reform through an honest and
?conoiuical administration of all State
affaire; That we cordially approve of the
cnur-e and action of onr standard-bean r
Govirnor Chamberlain since bis election,
and promise lum and those acting .with
him our encouragement and support in
all future efforts to r- form abuses, and to
.give chmaciei and dignity to Republicanism.
In regard to the charges brought by the

are true in every particular and that they

commissioners and the reports of the
