BKAUHORT. H. C. A1?KH. 21, 1H7A. k Bald^iw Aitlks at French'?. Messrs R. P. Bundle & Co. have succeeded "Walker & Bcutt as agents for the New York and Port Royal Steamship line. Read the calls in another column for meetings of the Directum and Stockholders of tho Port Royal Railroad. A fire on the roof of the kitchen of P. C. Wilson on SundajL^dSraing last called out the machines. Tjeirassistance however was not needatf. A meeting was called at the office of George Gage last Saturday, to consult as to what action should be taken in regard to the approaching trial of Tax Titles in the U. S. Court in Charleston. As the trial will be a test case it was thought to the interest of all owning tax title property that the case should be defended by able attorneys, and to that cud M. Pollitzcr and Robert Smalls were uppviuibcu n committee to go 10 Charleston to Confer with District Attorney Corbiu, while another committee was to canvass property owucrs in order to raise funds to aerure counsel, a* it was thought the District Attorney might not be able to give the case that attention necessary to represent the interests ot holders of these titles. The arrival of the U. S. fleet in PortRoyal Harbor has quite brightened up business prospects of the towu of lieaufort as well as Port Royal. Tho merchants are doing quite an nctivc little trade. The oflicers and seamen come up occarionlly and the Steamer Pinta, the dispatch boat of the Sqiadrou runs back and forth every duy. The "Colorado" the flag ship which we had heard wns going out of couiiuis-.iosi was reported as ordered to remain. She is expected in and with her arrival will make fivt vessels in the squadr >n. The oflicers are vtry gentlemanly and the seamen appeal v to be quite picked crews. We understand that thev will erect barracks at Bay Point for the summer, at least. , Their stay will doubtless be per manent, and the station for the South Atlantic squidron will no doubt be transferred from l?cy West which is notu bly sickly to Port Hoyal undoubtedly t. salubrious and health!/. Welcome "ycv Navy of the U. S. The entertainment given by the Reading Room Association at the Sea Island Hotel Thursday evening last was a very successful affair: the Inrge dining hall wax crowded and every thing in connection with the occasion sec.ned to be arranged for the comfort and pleasure ol the guesta. The music was good, Mr jN. R. Scuvel presided at tho piano assist< d by a string band. Dancing was the order of the evening and the efficient -way in which Mr. Silat Wright, with Messrs Davenport, Clancy, vnd Milvin conducted the management conduced to the success of the evening. Cnrd tables were provided for such as preferred that kind of amusement and we noticed some of our elderly friends enjoying themselves hugely. The superb supper and the arrangement of the tables reflected much credit upon the Indies who superintended it. We learn that to the indef.ith*:ihle fnnrrrv r>f ?0?"-V*5J v" Mis* Botunie the success of the entertainment is mainly due, and the assistance of Miss Foye, Mrs. Boyce, Mrs.* W right. Miss Ritchie, Miss Hannah and Miss Lizzie llunn, Mrs John llunn and Mrs Crofut was invaluable. The materials for the supper were contributed by the ladies of the committee and other ladies who1 belong to the association whose names we have been unable to learn. Such gathering* are very pleasant and we hope that others of a like nature may speedily idlluw. The Town Council. Council ynet Wednesday evening April 14th.
