There ? have been hundreds of combinations in stocks and gold, says a New York .city paper, but these have generally run on . a heavy credit system, while tho gold u pool, as far as can be ascertained, is engineered on a purely cash basis. In ^ the locking up of gold hitherto the practice of the cliques has been to make their original purchase of cash gold, p pledge it as collateral for a loan of greenbacks, buy more gold, pledge this in " turn for greenbacks, and so on indefiu- {J, itely. But in this case the combination j is what Wall street men call "solid." bi It moves but leaves no trail. Gold is hi taken from the street by the million, and yj disappears mysteriously; still those who hope to see it turn up in the banks are u disappointed. It is never hypothecated ai with the banks, it does not find its way ti back to the street; it is hidden from 5 sight. More than this, the operation of p withdrawing gold from the market is a: slowly and mysteriously going on every w day. Tho premium is advanced point 01 by point at tho will of the pool, and cash * gold, needed for business purposes, can w be bought or borrowed only from its v agents and at its own rates. Wall street d never was so mystified. In former pools 0 there was always something upon which ? to form an accumte judgment, but in n this there is nothing calculated to li definitely point out the personelle of the b clique. The street is full of rumors and n gossip, but when an inquirer tries to pin Fl his informer down to solid fact he finds ti that most of his statements are founded ii upon conjectures more or less justified ? by circumstances. p This much is conceded, however, on j( all sides, that the pool is one of the t strongest, and by long odds the most y shrewdlv manaced of nnv in tl>? Riofrwir i & of monetary gambling. It was formed n when gold was selling between 112 and c 113, but so quietly were its movements f< conducted that it was many days before ? the outside operators were nwarn of its magnitude. Point by point it wont up. J Now and then indications wore thrown n out by the artful managers of a tendency tl to weakness. Then the bears came in * with a rush, and the result was just what " the clique wanted?the formation of a t] heavy short interest. Holding nearly all ij the cash ?old, the cliquo fixed its own n rates of interest, squeezing the shorts * on one occasion to the tune of one-fourth per cent, per diem. Knowing tliat any suddenness of movement on their part ti might prompt the interference of the government, which killed the famous Black Friday combination, the managers worked slowly, but surely, strengthening c their position day by day. The scarcity of gold and the condition of the finances 0i and mercantile affairs favored them, and li besides this their members were men of P immense resources. 3. The affair was eondnMWl an ? wwooV b that even Wall street did not know who was in it. It only knew that gold as as it was offered was taken, and from k that moment disappeared from the market. At an early day over $15,000,000 0. was thus held. it ti A Pretty Experiment* ^ Some of our younger readers may like to try the experiment of making a hanging garden of sponge. It is a pretty novelty. Take a white sponge of large size, and sow it full of rice, hemp, grass and other seeds ; then place it in a shal- si low dish, in which a little water is con- v stantly kept, and as the sponge will &bsorb the moisture, the seeds will begin b to spront before many days. When this ? has fairly taken place, the sponge may be suspended by means of cords in the window where a little sunshine will ? enter. It will thus become a mass of Hl green foliage, and should be refreshed J with water daily so as to be kept moist. CD Wheeler k Wilson's Sewing Machines. <* ei We call attention to the Wheeler & L Wilson advertisement in our columns. b This well known company has the most *j advantageous facilities for supplying the _ public with sewing machines, on as favor- ~ kiujs on i>uo mwiiKWfl will allow. ? They warrant all their work, and it is a M matter of importance to the pnrcliaser to k deal with a company whose position and it permanenoe give assurance that their guaranty will he fulfilled. They have to agencies and offices throughout the civil- ized world, for furnishing needles, thread n and other necessary supplies, and have (? an established reputation for reliability i mi/1 t*ir dealing. * | The Piano-Harp Cabinet Organ is a lew invention, oombining three and >ne-half octaves of a pianoforte, or of an nstrumont with tones between those of he piano and the harp with the organ, [t is a beautiful instrument, costing but ittle more than tho organ. The Mason it Hamlin Organ Co. are not able to nanufacture it rapidly enough to supply he demand. * Pumpkins. An army captain whose company was tationed at Baton ltouge, La., purchased b wagon load of pumpkins for $2.50, and ordered the first sergeant to give the aen all tho pumpkins they oould eat, aying that it would make them grow ike young pups. Thereafter the men lad pumpkins for dinner, and pumpkins or supper. Two dollars n.rul firfw ed a company of sixty men for a whole (reek, and tlio captain was wondering rliat made his men deBert at the rate of roin ten to fifteen every pay day. Six Millions. About two years ago, Dr. J. Walker, ;n old and prominent physician of Caliornin, discovered, by actual experienoe ipon his own system, a medicine which nay honestly be termed "a boon to tillering humanity." Being a combinaion of lierbalistic extracts, pungent and our to the taste, and yet possessed of jentlo stimulative characteristics? Ithough entirely free from alcohol?he lamed it Vinegar Bitters, and despite he prejudice existing among his proession against all patented medicines, le determined to brave the jeers of his ?rother practitioners, and give to snfferng humanitv the benefit of his accidental liscovery. He did so, and tire benefits rom its use became known. The deaand increased, and immense quantities rare sold, at a merely nominal price, ts merit is told in the fact that " in two ears over six millions of bottles have een sold;" and still the demand inreases. Surely such a man should be Miked among the benefactors of the uman race. * Owing to grave oppositions, cremation i not likely to prevail. . Few Words to Feeble and Delicate Women. Bv R. V.
