In contrast with the comparative ex

fishc'S are from the confined areas of their
habits, almost entirely under man's cou
trol. They arc by one device or another
relatively easy of capture, and while limited
in nutural increase by tlic quantity
of food at hand, tlioy are drawn upon by
man for subsistauce purpose s to an unwairanted
extent; with this result that
scarcely any piece of ftvsh water ia the
populous portions of our land furnishes
half the qunutty of food-fishes it could be
made to yield under a judicious system
of protection. As articles of food, ami
taken as u whole, the fresh water fishcare
vastly inferior to their ocean relatives.
For this reason tlicy occupy but siightiy
the attention of tlic practical firii cu>vurist.
We come now to the third class.
Among the anadromous fishes are count
cd the choicest varieties upon earth or iu
the waters adjoining the earth, and at
their head by the universal consent of
mankind, ufacile 1'rincept" stands the
lordly Salmon. Being thus regarded and
untiringly pursued as a valuable article
of consumption and merchandise, it L>
not so very long since ths Canadiano
found that these valuable fish were rapidly
disappearing from their waters, and
tiiat unless something were dons to prevent
it their unci productive and vama-l
ble salmon fisheries would soon become
extinct. Be it remembered that thc.e

gh-rs annually captured in the Maine
waters. Practically the species may be
regardeil as extinct at the present tiin
along the entire cou.-vt of New England.
But the Canadians, warned in time, up

elapsed. It will be worth our wlii.e to
devote considerable time and space to
the history of the decline and revival oi
the Canadian Saliiioni fisheries, iiiasmmh

serve our interests in like manner, if un
sparingly administered a..d duly enforced.
