He is a good workman and will pkase all who patronize him. The bill to pay the claims of the Freed mens Bank in this place, was killed in the II ou?e last week. It was shown that the claim was for state paper left with tinbank as collateral for n loan and the Assembly concluded that the bank roust take its dinners with other creditors, or look to the borrower for its money. W. P. Russell & Co.?The card of this popular firm appc rs in the Tribcnk and in calling nttcntiou to it we take pleasure in commending these gentlemen and thcit establishment as wor.liy of patronage. They are prepared to execute any and all kinds of work in their line with promptness and -it moderate prices. There is nn effort being made to divert tho money realized from the tax of one mill for school purposes in thie county, assessed for the payment of past indebtedness to l>e used for the payment,of school expense* for this year. We understand the loss was slight, the demijohn of whiskey being saved, at the risk of the mau'f life, who left the boy in the capsized boat, and swam after the demijohn, notwithstanding the cries of his boy, who was waist deep in water. + A first class fraud calling himself J. Henry Mayer, visited our town last week, representing himself as an agent for a St. Louis firm and sold about $10,000 worth of goods. Several of our merchants eagerly bit at the great bargains he offer*. ;1 and in anticipation of such enormous profits they were quite happy. One oi our most thrifty grocers ssii he'd *' bi darned if he would buy any more goods in Charleston," St. Louis would hereafter get his money. A telegram exposed the cheat and Charleston is expected to sur ive. Whitney Sclinnl. Saturday was rendered enjoyable to many of our town's people, by a visit to the Whitney school, near Old Fort, which under the direction of Miss E. II. llotume, and her assistant Miss Lizzie Humi, is one of the best conducted institutions of the kind to be found in tho state. Upon our arrival the pupils were seated in a scmicir cle upon the rivor bank, and word being served with generous portions of bread and ham,(by their elders, whose official connections with the festivities was designated by rosettes pinned upon one shoulder, and of which decoration they secuied to be as proud as a General of his strap. After all, both old and young, had abundantly satisfied their appetites with these substantial the children were formed in line and marching to the music of one of their own weird tuues, they commenced to tile into the school room, where they were soon seated and then the fathers and mothers were admitted, until every available sitting and standing position was occupied. At this time there could not have been ltss than two hundred persons in the school roon exclusive of the visitors, each face henmed with happiness and one was almost disposed to envy their kind teachers the enjoyment thoy must have felt at knowing that to them was due. the credit of affording this treat to their pupil*. At the conclusion of the singing remarks were made to the children by Mr. Lehlbach. h i Mr. Hammond, Mrs. F. D. Gage, and Miss G , t Botumc. These all strove to impress the fact upon the minds of those interested that success in the school could only be assured bv the coonerathm of ?.h? namniM '> | and most particularly of the mothers. Miss Botume could always tell by the ^ I conduct of the pupil whether the home in- u iluence and restraints were good or otherwise, but as a whole she was proud of the conduct of Her pupils, and instances where t?i it was necessary to administer correction ai were rare. Afterwards cake was passed h around and then each child was presented with a ba? of candy, after receiving which they dispersed about the grouuds. ,l We were entertained with nreprescnta- ^ : lion of the shoot dance which combining ! a perfect idea of time, with its inournl'u! , I armony. is beautiful. Is it not about time that the books were examined and a report of the finances made in accordance with the real condition of the accounts? The law says thc. IS treasurer shall receive a commission on coli lections until the commissions amount to two thousand five hundred dollars, but ehall not exceed that amount. b i We have shown that he has received ' $2,000 from the State and $1,250 from ' the County ; iu addition to which we are informed he lias deducted commissions lor collecting the school tax amounting to $500, altogether $3,750. To show the falsity of the above figures let us see how they compare : lie reports 10 me uomptrouer-ueneral the county tax abated at $3,131.43. Again the 20 per cent, penalty in one report is given as $2,435.25 and afterwards j. to the Commissioners lie reports the 20 per cent, penalty as being only $1,942.15.
