Again is the country called upon to view with dismay the terrors which arc sought to be precipitated upon the unfortunate State of Louisiana, by tho license of irresponsible power. The President lias ngain committed himself to the now universally condemned policy of military interference in its civil polity. To what has our boasted civilization under republican rule drifted us, when tho Legislative Sails of a Sovereign State are invaded by armed soldiers and its very organization prescribed by imperial decree? To what base uses are our reserved powcra applied, when entrusted to an arrogant and ufl r, inj d *p >t.:sm hat lu.s lorg ince .oundoned eternal principles for acclden i a I ' * **" .? ? uuu wiiere morality is hot a science bat a trade. President Grant cannot escape the stern logic of events which must grow out of an attempt to incite sedition if none exists, and to stimulate faction if Tiolcnt animosities actually threaten, No virtue he may simulate, to disguise the real object of an invasion of the most sacred rights assailed i by the most odious tyrruny, will divest his unscrupulous abuse of power of its true intent as a convenient crime. If the people of Louisiana shall exercise that forbearance which it is to hoped they may to tho disappointment of the conspirators against their welfare, and which may weil.be conoidind God-like, their wrongs and oppressions will bi avenged by the nation. But if forbearance ceases to be a virtue and popular indignation produces popular outbreak, it will be no more than would be justified by the highest resort and no more than would be right by any people and any State simi-larly outraged. OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS. There could be no better time or opportunity for thfl intrndnpHon ~i ? " uignci standard of excellence in the formation of ear Boards of Trustees as well as in the selection of a more competent set of teachers in oar public schools than at this moment. We hare a graduate of Cambridge as our School Commissioner, and we are sure his education and training must find the constituents of both far below what he would desire to be brought in contact with, in the discharge of his varied and responsible duties. It would be a graceful tribute to reform if some of the present board would resign and lend their efforts to having educated men supersede them. It is to the proper education of our youth, both black and white, that our greatest improvement is to be made permanent, and our present corps of teachers -w ith but a few exceptions are unfit masters of the situation It would not dcro ato evea from those members of the Legislature who happen tc hold over in the Board of Trustees to give place to those whose time and attention could be more zealously devoted to the interest of education, from which their services are distracted by other nod more absorbing dntits anH 1 o ? - ? nn|nv 1TVUIU be worthy of imitation by others, not a.s - competent, end who hold seats on the several boards.
