r Serious Accident to Gen. N. G Evens. A very serious and painful accident hap[>eued to General Evans between nine and ten o'clock Saturday morning. The j General aud his brother, Captain A. L. j Evans, were in a light buggy, drawn by two horses, riding dowu Meeting-street, \ the General holding the rcius. They jbad passed the Courier office, corner of. lteid aud Meeting, but a little distance, wheu one of the traces gave way, cau. sing the horses to start oil' at full speed, ' jerking and_ breaking the shaft short off, and bringing down the front of the j buggy with a crasb to the grouud. The j General, in his effort to check the frigh- ! toned animals, was drawn ovgy the dash I board, Lis head striking the paving stones with fearful violence. Several persous from the Courier office who wit- j ncssed the accident, ran to the assts-1 tanee of the General, brought him in and .sent immediately for medical assistance. When picked up he was found to be insensible, and bleeding profusely from a frightfully lacerated wuund on the right side of the head, and with several severe euts about the eyes and mouth. The whole frontal bone was laid entirely bare, the skin all being taken off. Drs i Lebby uud Ogicr, Army Surgeons, ar- J .rived in a few moments and dressed the j wound. He.was-afterwards conveyed to. | .Mr. Schirmcr's residence, iu Aiken ! Tlow, when his head was again examiued | by Dr. I?rod:e. The General, althou-'h iu a critical . % condition, somewhat revived towards Saturday evening, and afterwards passed a comparatively easy night. Every atteutiou which kindness and skill can j suggest is being paid him, and strong j hopes are entertained of his ulriuiato rc- ; covcry. ? The bulk of the Yankee force has been j withdrawn from the coast to Louisiana, |; v 3eaving4.000 or ">,000 men fnr.garrisou j and offensive operations. Among the number arc the Uuitcd States of America. Mr. Dayton, the American ' * r Minister in Paris, having already inti- ! .mated the readiness of his Government to accredit a representative in Mexico, j and receive a minister from the Euipcror. : of Mexico. Towards the Confederate States, the policy of Maximilian will be j' h that of strict neutrality. By the advice ! j of the Einperor Napolian, he will abstain | | from recognizing the independence of the j < .Southern Confederacy, or entering iijto : any diplomatic relations with it until France shall have douc so. During | Maximilian's visit to Paris, Mr. Slidell | applied by letter to iiuu tor au audience. | After consulting'hits Imperial host, Maximilian firmly but courteously declined to grant it. The ruuiers, therefore of an early recognition of the Coufedcrate i States by France and Mexico, aj;d an al- ' liancc between the latter empire and the Southern Confederacy, are altogether devoid of foundation.?London (Hole. April 4 On Saturday, the enemy' both cavalry ; and infantry, advanced on our lino of pickets, and after a brisk skirmish retired. What loss they sustained, (if any) cannot be ascertained.
