Notice. Tho annual meeting of the Stockhold' ers ot the Port Royal Rail Road will be held in Beaufort on Tugsday, Apri 28th, 1874. ' Infanticide. ' On Sunday last a woman named Charotte Stewart created a sensation in our town by wilfully destroying the life of her infant immediately after its birth and throwing its body in a vault. A woman living in the same premises accidentally discovered the body and gave notice to the marshal who arrested the murderess and lodged her in jail to wait an investigation by the coroner. Dr. Johnson, coroner, was notified of the occurrence aud a jury ofiuqucst was 1111panuelled. Several witnesses were examined who lived on the premises, together with the person who found the child. The daugthter of Chariottc Stewart the mother, about ten years old was then ex amioed and testified as follows : That at 12 a. Qi., ou Sunday, the time when the child was horn it cried, and her mother took it and laid it on the Door and put a trunk ou it and when the trunk was taken off by her mother about dark the child was dead. Her mother then demanded her to take it uud throw it in the vault, but she refused, and was very roughly treated lor it. In the same room at the time of the occurrence was a woman named Hannah Fields, who upon being questioned denied all knowledge of the murder. The jury after considering the case carefully, rendered the following verdict; "That the child came to its death by violent treatment at the hands of its mother,' Charlotte Stewart and that ilannuh Fields was an accessory to the fact." j fcsf Our esteemed friend, Judge CarIftton, met with a sad loss at the meeting of the republican coumiitt *e ou Friday even tig la-it. His iiuniero'.ii acquaintances are requested to bewail with him. In the political fervor of its component parts produced by spread eagle speeches and perhaps had whiskey, some benighted individual, fearless of the ma* 1 1 - -i ? ... ,i... As our friend is so good looking, we are tliankfui his head was not taken with it. tear An accident occurred to one of Mr. Crofut's lighters, wliile being used to freight oak staves to the Bauquieuu; from being too heffvily loaded, it sunk and most of th" staves floated away. m- A serious accident happeued lately to Mr. l'ollitzer's wharf. A large section fell in, carrying with it Mr. Von Harton's horse and cart. They were res-' cued with some difficulty and fortunately with hut little injury. HaT Mr. .J. Adger Smyth, is stirring up the merchants of the interior cities to establish direct trade with Europe by a line of steamers from Liverpool to Charleston. We wish him success for if the r*line is established, his steamers will be sure to run to Port lioyal, after one trial of Charleston harbor. IW They are having a lively time in Judge Carletou's court. Crime seems on the increase. Two eases of assault and battery are on hand, and it requires all the hirsute aud ferocious appearance of the Judge, to keep the criminals lioin punching and clawing each other up like kilkennycats ; perhaps it were better lie did I?- A sailor belonging to the crew of one of the brigs at our wharves died very suddenly of pneumonia and was buried t iu the Baptist Church grave yard The bark Buiiqiircau is still at our wharves but is expected to clear soon with a cargo of oak staves and 700 tons cotton seed in bags and bulk. la?* Kev. Dr. J unes Freeman Clarke and lady of Boston are pas-ins a few days in town. We understand'hat this eloquent divine is travelling for the benefit of his health. We hope his sojourn in the '"Sunny South" will soon restore him to his accustomed field of usefulness. Prodigious Excitement. The inamftth cake of gigantic proportions and of crystalline beauty, I bat was to be presented to the captain of the L steamer Texas, with gorgeous pomp and m ceremony, accom^puicd with a tin snuff ? box containing the freedom of the city I was,-' alas! poor Yorick,"-raffled for and won Monday evening by the ever-lncky Joe Fupong. Wc trust his digestion is sound or there will be a sudden call njiotj Mr. Brodic and his stj'lish carriage. W. M -French has just received a large lot of choice groceries, including horse radish, chow-chow, patent barley, roisted java coffee and choice butter; call en hint. _ Hjmn for Children* Yes; the Lord is ever with us, Aud we cannot if we wonld Do wit)io<it His heavenly presence) For he watches us for good. Darkness bides us not from liim, Light is ever round His throne. He will cheer us when in trouble, Guard and guide us when alone. * He will bring us safe at last, With Him eser to abide; Let me ne?er then forget, Or forsake my Heavenly guide. -Kl.BT. Nothing Like Industry* We learn that Gen. Siua:l> ita~ offered to'purchase from the Schaper Drib,, the old Beaufort Hotel at a hundsouje ad?r\r\ /.Af f VttllW vu wen. How is this tliusly on six hundred a year. An answer is respectfully requested. Great complaint is being made atriinst those who clean their drum fish on the Free landing. They throw the entrails where the sun beams on it and give that section a very offensive odor? while in other instances fish is kept hung up in the sun for a whole day with a view of selling on the landing instead of taking it to the market. Now we hope the Marshal will keep an eye to business and have this nuisance stopped as well as prohibit the selling of fish on the dock when the market is the proper place. -#ft-We hear that there will be a full service at the Episcopal Church next Sunday (Easter) with elaborate music for the occasion. TRIAL JUSTICE'S COURT. Before Judges Carleton and Fuller. Hannah Fields, charged with being an accessory to the fact of the murder of the infant found iu the vault on Monday last and who upon the verdict of the jury was lodged in jail. On Tuesday there was a writ of habeas corpus issued. She was brought out and committed in the sum of five hundred dollars to answer at the Ju.Je term. B?- Sixty more emigrants arrived from New York on the 18th. in Charleston and were taken charge of by the German society, and carried to the boarding house at the corner of Line and King streets, where they were given a hearty j meal; they were all robust looking febows i and full of energy and activity.
