? LOCAL AFFAIRS. Thursday, March U 1M74. POST OVFICK IIOURN. Beaufort ?. C., Sept. 24. 1873. On and After Morula* Oct. 1th, office open from 3:13 A. iff'., until I p.m., mail closes at 9:15 a. u tlail delivered at 2:10 p. ni > E. E7EKIEL. l'(?t>na?ter. jKcf On isaturday la^t. the time for paying taxes without the penalty expired. The people appear to have paid up very well, but there are still many, especially among the colored people, who have incurred the ttaeoty per cent penalty by their delay cr inability to pay. The treasurer promtly handed the books ^ ondifnr who is at Work UVC1 \AJ hue hmm-.*. adding the penalty. Firemen's Parade* By drtbr of Chief Engineer II. M. the fire department paraded ior drill and inspection on Monday. Washington Engine Company turned out with twenty-three members, under their foreman A. 8? Davenport. They frere dressed in their new uniform, and looked very handsomely. Union Engine Company, Wm. Mitchell, acting foreman appeared with twenty-six men in the ranks. Their aprcarance was very creditable to them. The Hose Company had but five members out. The Hook and Ladder Company had fifteen in line, undercommand of Gabriel Parker foreman. The men and apparatus seemed in excellent order. During the drill it became evident that the department would be but a poor defense against a large fire. Seven lengths of hose bursted during the trial. New hose must be provided if we expect the companies to be of any service in time of danger. The Port Royal Docks, Warehouse, andBankiug Company, recently chartered by the legislature, was the Subject of a public meeting at Port Royal on Monday last. Mr. 'Pete* Papin expin ned the objects of the com[mny to be the development of business at our new port and enlarged upon the facilities which with proper development will soon attract a great trade here. Subscriptions were nude to the capital stock to the a ount of nearly ten thousand dollars. The company will first direct its energies and means to the purchase of a steamer to ply between New York and Port Royal. Professor Holuics' Lectures. We are sure our citizens will be pleased I to learn that Prof. F. S. Holmes, the eminent naturalist and lecturerofChaileston, S. C-, will bettver a course of scientific lectures at the Sea Island Hotel on Thursday and and Friday evenings ol the Jrr'escnt week. The subject selected are ''Whdl Heology has to*tell of the earth and ir> inhabitants,' and " Rock Splint-j crs" or "Do you ku-'"v whit audi i Both of these lectures wiil be illustrated by meaii9 of Prof. II >lmcs patent binoptric lanterns, "wllic-h produce trans" paranoics eight feet squafc. Over one hundred|ofJthese illustrations will begiven during the lecture. We hope our citizens generally will avail themselves of the the opportunity of attenJing this scries of first class lectures. The young people, and especially students will gain much valuable Information?imparted in the way which Cannot fail to impress the subject deeply upon their minds In fact, all who want to be amused and instructed at the same time should attend. Tickets may be had of the committee. Coal at Port Royal. We call attention to the advertisement in another column which offers to a 1 using coal on these waters, an excellent article at a price much less than has been heretofore demanded in our neighboring cities. The Sewanee mines are famous for producing the best qualities of bituhiinous coal, very free from sulphur and of the highest steam producing power. tSf The South Carolina Legislature promises to adjourn on Saturday next, subject to the call of the presiding officers of the two houses. We cannot conceive of any possible danger to the State which Would warrant those officers iu calling such a body together again Webster's Unabridged, New Illustrated Edition. .As the traveler at the eternal city gazes wuh rapture upon the wondrous dome, and upon each recurring vi it beholds something new. some new feature he had not seen before, so it is with the student of Webster. The oftener one turns over its almost em I less pages, uio more ins admiration is challenged. It would he superfluous to speak in detail of the merits of this great work; yet it would be impossible to say a word too muck in its j raise. Brunson Incorporated. The act to incorporate the town of Branson was ratified on Saturday lust. Fifteen months ago it had but one building, an ancient looking log cabin; a! out that time the .'uterprising firm of l'aul & Webb opened a >tore in it. From this begining the place rapidly improved. Stores, dweilin s. ohu'ch". an academy, steam mills, etc., have gaiiu-i<-d there. It is, in fact, the large i and most prosperous settlement on the lite of the Port Royal railroad, to which, of course, it dwes itfs existence. Very fc\f years more of such |?fd?<pcrity will be needed to place it in the frout rank of the towns of the State, most of which had the Wealth and prestige ol antebellum times, both to bnild and cherish them. OaT" New Hamphire, on Tuesday, elected a democratic governor by over 9m* thousand majority. q m DIED. in fieaufort, March 4th, of Typhoid fcver Li A. wife of ( apt. (j. 11.
