GARRICK. The rime which this great master of his art, spent in France, was pass ed almost entirely, in the society of the philosophers ; who, after wit nessing his uncommon powers, were compelled to acknowledge, that chough the English generally ex tolled their men ot talents, beyond their deserts, in the case ot Garrick, there was no exaggeration. He is" the first, and the only man (says one of these philosophers) that ever realized the ideas I have always con ceived, of all that was requisite to form a complete actor. Gar rick's great srt (he continues) con sists in alienating his mind perfectly from himself > and throwing himself completely into the situation of the fictitious personage he represents, so that for the time he ceases to be Garrick, and may almost be said to be really the person he sttms to be. Thus, as he dssumes any charac ter, he becomes so different from himself, that any one would think he h ad really ch anged his fe a t u re s and countenance, and would scarce ly be able to persuade themselves that he was the same man. It is easy to disfigure a countenance ; that, ?we can readily conceive ; but Gar rick is a .stranger to grimace; all the changes in his counrenance arise from the manner in which he is af fected internally ; he never goes be yond truth , and he is perfec^ mas ter of that other incomprehensible secret, how to embeilish truth, .without any other assistance than that of passion. We saw him play the dagger scene in Macbeth, in a room ; and only in his usual dress, destitute of all theatrical illusion ; but as he followed with his eye?, the dagger, suspended in the air, and leading him along his way, his face assumed so fine an expression, that he drew a general cry of admiration from every body present. Who would have thought it possible for the same man, a moment after, to imitate, with equal perfection, a poor little pastry cook's boy, carrying on his head a basktt of pies ?g_sell, and gaping about in the air, till his pies tall into the kennel, when at fiist he was whol ly stupified by the accident, and ended by bursting into a fit of cry ing. Nothing could be well more remote than the physiognomy of those two characters, ytt it was dif ficult to say which was the most perfect of its kind; and this accor can assume, with the same perfec tion, any great character that has a model in nature. The only parts he does not play well, are those fictitiojs ones which resemble no thing that ever really existed, and have their origin only in the meagre and ill-regulated imagination of the poet. He asserts that it is impos sible to be a truly good tragick ac tor, without being also a comick one ; and 1 believe him to be in the right j but if this be so, he has pronounced a terrible sentence a gainst all our tragick actors; and among others, his good friend and favorite Mademoiselle Clairon. She never could play a comick charac ter of any sort or kind, in a manner that was endurable. l PKiRAM.
