The following, from the Michigan Far- J1 Tmr, contains some good practical hints . and surestion<, :uiil may he read ami at- !' ted upon with profit by many of our Southern l eaders: 1 uIn reading the Farmer, I fiiul much good 0 information 011 nil subjects, yet I think the ?, Michigan swamps do not receive due atten- '' tion ; is the greatest evil that exists in our 4*?. . ?' ? * r>iaie. l rue, intemperance is bad enough, ami much lias boon said and done to do is away, but they thai will not drink the poi- Sl son. are not injured by it. Hut where it *' the person, small or great, that does not ' suffer by inhaling the poison arising from r< the stagnant water standing in our swamps? l' I think it is not a high estimate to say that S( one halt* of our sickness is caused by it. If we had all doctor's accounts, we would . form some idea how soon we could save enough from that source to drain all the 0 swamp. ISIien think of the time and pains, . and those loved ones we have borne away . to the grave yard. Is it not enough to con- , vince any man that there is an enemy in " our midst, and how can we drive it out? Should savages come in and kill one-h llf v as many of our citizen?, we would see the ^ inhabitants in arms at once. Let us have a ^ regular organization, appoint our editor ' ooimnander in chief, and all of us enlist ^ under him, and put the battle in array as fpiick as possible. "I can say from experience, that there is money in these swamps, and we have only g to drain the water out of the way to find it. f;i 1 cleared two acres of swamp : 14 years ago, p put it into grass, and have cut about four n times as much hay to the acre as on my upland, and enough more profit to pay me tor draining it every year. I had about w lour acres flowed with water two to four fl foot deep. T travelled round it, cleared h round it, and tilled around it, and still here iny enemy was on iny own premises. I took the pick and shovel and went at it, and ft felt much better in the ditch up to my neck, d; than I did looking at it and dreading it. I put in two rows of stones, six inches though, s; a flat stone on top, filled in with small stones and timber to within 12 or 15 inches of the top of the ground. In a part of it I' I put a scantling 4 by 4 and a plank on them. "I consider money more profitably paid " for ditching; than let for 50 per cent. But umi Hi-Hi caunui accompnsu inc oi?ject alone. 1 have drained the most of my own swamps, g yet I do not expect to realize much benefit as to health until until my neighbors drain theirs. We want a general effort throughout the State, and it will double the value tl of any man's farm." ti VARIETYDignity of Vocation. No impression prevailing in society, is more false or fatal to the manhood of a people, than that which gauges a man's } worth or respectability by the field of labor or profession he occupies, so long as that labor or profession is useful or honest. And we hold every useful vocation to be honest; _ denying most emphatically, that dishonesty is ever useful. The nobility of man in this country not depending, thank God! upon hereditary honor, title or wealth, should ~ flow not from the nature of his honest toil, but from the spirit he carries to that toil; yr the spirit by which, with or against the smiles t of temporal fortune, he shapes his career among and his intercourse with his fellow men. It has ever been our conviction that ^ lie is more of the true man, who turnsehim- fi ncy-sweeping to an honest independent ac- ^ count, than lie, who scorning the rough B< toils of the humble and needy, is willing to live an idler?however proudly caparisoned, jj upon the industry, sweat and blood of his fellow-men. ?J Henry Clay?republican in nil his instincts?paid the workingman R jus' ar|d noble compliment, when he said to a me- ?' chanic as he shook his hard hand, and poin- 18 ted to the city palaces and spires, "behold p, on every side the monuments to your glory?" fr What matters it whether one carry the hod or the plumbline; whether one mixes the * ' mnrt/ii' nr * * niu trowci, bo long as "* each is essential to the progressive triumphs of human attainments in all outward res- ? pectsl We would not have a man descend S to inferior conditions of toil voluntarily, if lie has the chance and capacity for the sup- J erior, but we would have every man feel -j that, when necessity commands, there is tfo ? useful labor dishonorable.
