That a few'yearsago the engineers had surveyed, and laid out the route of a Road through the Cherokee country, in Georgia, then a wilderness inhabited only by savage?, who gathered around ihe Camp, ot night, in such numbers as almost to alarm those engaged in the work?that that Road was now built and already the forest had been cut ({awn, the country settled up, produce supplied, and now the Road was doing a large business ; and the country had declared handsome dividends?that the country through wnicn our Koaci was to pass was wealth)', populous; and abounded with commodities, seeking a market, {he transportation of which, with the travel, made a I^qud profitable. His connection with the Board was as unexpected as it was unmerited ; hut he took pleasure now, he said, in assuring the other member?, and the Stockholders generally, thiU vvhatpvpr of influence he might have, and whatever energy or skill he professed, iti his individual capacity, should be everted to effect the completion of the Road. He closed by passing a high compliment upon the District, for its liberal subscription, already made, which he said was the largest made by any single District, and by assuring our friends, from abroad, that Abbeville would yet go as far as any other. I have now, Mr. Editor, laid before your readers a brief, and impcrfect report of the speeches. I have done it as accurately as the circumstances would allow, not expecting ^it the lime, to give a full report of the remarks. But they were, to my mind, so forcible, that I desired to present th?m to the consideration of the intelligent citizens of the District.
