In accordance with the published no tice, a meeting of taxpayers of School District No. 1, was held at the town hall on Tuesd-v, June 30th, at 13 o'clock m. On motion of Mr. J. R. Gpodale, Mr. A. D. Kennedy was called to the chair and !*? Beard, K*q., was elected Secretary. 1'he chairman read tlio call for the meet ing, after which a resolution was offered by Mr. J. T. Ilay: That a tax of mills be levied upon the taxable propei ty, real and personal of said School Dis trict, to maintain th?? free schools in said School District for the present \ ear. Mr. Arthur asked ns to thu length ot time the schools wero to be run, the amount to be raised and what schools it will go to. Mr. J. T. Hay responded. After argument by Messrs. Workman. Shannon, Goodalc, ct al., the question 'was called, with the following result: Ayes 32, nays none; the resolution for the tax being unanimously carried, amid chcers. The meeting then adjourned. Complaint as to Hands. Wo hear considerable complaint by different parlies lately as to the reliabil ity ot laborers; that since the commence ment of tho new hall, the laborers would leave employment, and go to work on the'building, sometimes for leas wages thin the first employer had promised. We can see no leaal way out of tho diffi culty, but there Is one characteristic of laborers which is so common and gener al that it may be accepted as a rule, and that is, that labor is always at the com mand of the man or moi/who pay, and who do not ask their employees to re ceive anything but money for their ser vices. The furiner, or other man, whose arrangement* make It necessary for lh?)in to pay their help in orders, can scarcely seoure reliable or desirable help In their ' intends to liquidate Ida obligation* 'by saying "I will pay you to morrow/' The hands, even though they hnvo no eduoatiati, soon leuru that there Is llttlu distinction between the two, and as they believe that there Is truth in the adage i "the laborar Is wovtny of his hire" and as tfiey do not feel that they should be the ones to suffer loss under such cir cumstances, they do now, and always will, drop what appears unprofitable, no matter what tho loss to tho employer 1 may be. to find work where they can get the money at a regular time, oven nt a smaller dally salary. The Instances ! where a feeling of honor will prevent a laborer from pursuing such a oourae, are few indeed. The Interests of both de mand short and regular settlements, and the man jpho lives up to thU ru'o can always choose his own hands, and he need have no fear that they will loavo him In a pinch, while the hireling can use his small wages to his own liking or Interest. The sooner this rule is adopted the better It wtll he for all, and the more satisfactory; and the sooner will com plaint that hands are unreliable die out. Tiller'l Ferry.
