There were 17 grand jurors lu atten dance upon the present term of court, who received pay for two days and mil eage. The total amount paid to them was $70.25, of which amount $25.50 was for per diem and $41.75 for mileage. The whole amount of mileage was S'J5 miles. 4taaL'lub Organized. The State vs. Bird Blackwell, assault and battery with intent to kill and as sault and battery, was called and trial proceeded with. This was quite an In teresting case. The defendant had no counsel, tiot having arranged to pay for such services. Bird, however, managed his own case iu such a manner as to se cure a vet diet Of acquittal. The prose cuting witness lu the ease was his wife, Catharine Blackwell, said to bu a white woman; while Bird Is as black as coal. Catherine charged Bird with having as, saulled her in a most violent and Inhu man manner. Bird had no witnesses, but he gave some testimony and made a little speech which succeeded In freeing him from the meshes of the law and the county Jail. In this case the defendant, Willis Mlckle, itn overseer of roads tu the coun ty, was chnrged with having trespassed upon certain property while engaged in overseeing the work of repairing tbe Darlington road, near Green's bridge, about 2 tulles from L'amden. The pros ecution testified 'that the county commis sioners had been notified to prohibit the cutting of ncertain daiu running near the road, tor tho purpose of repairing the road, and that subsequent to 6uch notice the defendant had committed a trespass by taking dirt from enid property for road purposes. The defendant set up the plea that he did not Ires puss upon the dam, but took dirt from tho edge of a hole very close to the road, but that the hole extended from where such excavation was made, to the base of the daiu. The jury rendered a verdict of acquit tal. 1 his Ihst case concluded the business in the Sessions, except a small case on appeul from trial justice, which did not require a Jury, and the easo of A H. Perry, which was heard on Wednesday. It will be seen that only four cases were tried up to Tuesday, *11 of them very insignificant ones, and not one of the parties found guilty.
