As previously announced In tVieieool uuiti* the determination hud been formed by the "Kershaw Guards" to oelobrate Washington's Birthday by _? parade through the principal streets of Camden on Friday, Feb'y. *Kh. b?t cljroumstan ces transpired which debarred the Guards from fulfilling their IrUeutlous. On Monday afternoon last, however, the member* of the company, assembled ?t their Armory in the Olyburu building, and were farmed Into line, headed by the Helicon Brass Band. . . 7'hc Hue of March wai up Broad street to Monument Park, where some tljne was passed In going through the inanti m1 of arms and oilier manaevres. The company attracted much attention and unanimously favorable comment from hII who witne??ed the parade; the new mid exquisitely iiaudsome uniforms of tli* company adding greatly to the scene and Indicating a lively Interest in the organization, on the part of It* officers and members. Owing to the absence of severnl of the members, and the Inability of others to appear, there' were bnt 34 men, rank tttul rfle; nevertheless the display was a most excellent and . creditable one, and Camden should, and doubtless dues, feel proud of having ho llnely equipped and well-drilled a military company as is the Kershaw Guards. , . , ... IJJSTORY OP THE GUARDS. { Tlie Kershaw Guards were organized on the 4tl"? of.July. W7T,' In; Jn*es* Hall, with a mem be ramp of about 87, rank and file. MaJ. E. II. Cantev was at that time olected Captain of the company. Shortly afterwards, upon the organiza tion Of the regiment,' Capt. E. B. Cantey was elected Colonel of the reglmout, and ii pou his promotion, Mr. 8. Logan Lang w is clucked to till the vacancy. The Guards attended tiie unveiling ceremonies of the Confederate Monu ment at Columbia on the 13th of May, 1879, being under command of Lieut. J, J. Mackay. From that time forwardj interest In the company began to de crease, and complete disorganization re sulted; the compciiv existing only iu name. The grand dlsph.y <>i military compa nies which V.UIted C a.us??n cu the 20th of June lost seems to have Inspired the young men of Camden with renewed ar dour In this direction .''and the subject of re-organizing the Guards was discussed almost dally. On the 4th of July last h meeting was held at t lyburnV Hull, which was large ly attended, and reMilled iu a thorough re-orgHhizutimi of tlie compauy. On this occasion Mr. VV. M. Shannon wn? chosen fnptulu of tlie command, who has iHkt*u it deep and lively interest in tlie welfare of the organization, and win ce z<*a^, aided by the officer* and ?cv eral of the rank, has brought the e:?m pauy to its present prosperous condition. A lew mouths ago, steps were taken ti? provide new and Improved uniforms. Tlie members of the compauv were as sessed for this purpose, which assess ment was promptly paid, ami an enter tainment was given at Town Hail to a?* slht in provldiiig moans w herewith to purchase new uniforms. An encoura ging sum of muuey was thus raised, anil tlie Guards went to work at once to ob tain their greatly covetod "uow cloe's," A few weeks since THKIK NKW UNIFORMS were received, and they are really hand some. Tho suit Is of grey, trimmed with black: grey caps with white pdlnpoons tipped with black ; white cross-belts with braes plate on wliich appears the familiar palmetto tree; and, lastly, a pair of exquisite epaulettes ol grey, wit gold fringe. The company now presents as flan eriiig an appearance as. any mili tary company in the State. The cost of the uniform Is about $1,000. OFFICERS.
