C.# DEC. 81, \*82~ ~ STEP BY STEP. * Scorn not the little thing* of life, for they avo tho material which go to make up the grandest achievements ever at tained by mortal. Step by step, our greatest author* havo risen until they have reached that pinnacle Of fktne for which they tolled so unceasingly, and then flash upon the literary world like some radiant star, \vhoso dsxillng splendor outshines and pales all<lts predecessors. Little by little this broad, green earth wasformed, upon which wo live ; all the beautiful flowers we love so much to see, the ltulo birds that seein never to tire of singing to us their sweet songs of praise, wercrsent to cheer our pathway through life and remind us of the fereat Creator of All, to whom we phould render our thanks for the rich blessings which He hath bestowed upon us. Minute by minute, tiino flows rapidly on, each day bringing us a little nearer to eternity, until we cross tho dark river of Death, and enter that ''bourno from which no traveler o'er returns." Our whole life Is uiudc up of little things? fortunes are made by tho sav ings of pennies, which gradually grow . Into dollars, tens, hundreds nud thous ands, until their owner has reached the acme of his desires and llnds hluiself a millionaire. But we are sure to ftdl if we under / ako to mount the summit by one great esp? the yawning iibyes of despair l? sure to engulf us. It is by careful, 1 sternly steps, taken ono by ono, that we may hope to reach its heights and reap the glory nnd honor which awaits us thore as our reward. During the past year Governor Ha good exercised Executivo clemency in twenty-Ave Instances, ten commutations Of sentences and fifteen pardons. lie gives good roasons for every act and ho Is supported by tho approbation of all thinking poople. In his Inaugural address, Gov. Thomp son gave expression to tho following. "Although I havo boon elected as tho representative of a political party, in the performance of my duty 1 shall bo the Govornor of tho wholo poople of the State. I havo no friends to reward ; no enemies to punish, no partisan schemes to advance; no private ends to accom plish. M You aro on tho right track, as usual, Gov.
