He a poke in u clear, loud roiee, and with a faultless scoeot, ^though hia sentenoee were at times stilted or invert ed. Apologizing for having to intro duoe himself, he remarked he was imitating our missionaries, who gono into China without any introduc tion. Besides, he said, it would be dif ficult for any one to introduce him ou ac count of his name being hard to pro nounce. The name announced was only the conclusion of his name, which, in full, was Ten-Ming-Tree-Way-8him 8hu% Sliing- Tie-Way - 8Wng-Shon-Tan T*s -Way Keo - Tan - Ye-Cke - Pon-Kow WongCliing-Foo. It wafc, he said, a mistake of the newspapers to speak of him as a missionary; for he was not one. He held that it was not necessary fdr nny . nation to seni^ missionaries to any other. It was his desire, he said, simply to explain the doctrines of his faith, whioh had been misunderstood by the American people. Many things con cerning his country were misrepresented by Christian missionaries in order to ob tain contributions. A proper knowledge of tho real state of things in China would have tho effect of diminishing the receipts of the Board of Foreigu Mis sions. Wong enumerated many false idoas in respect to his race entertained by Americans. He spoko with great earnestness, and at times had to pause from sheer breath leanness. He had oc casionally to stop a moment to recall a word, but as a rule hiB speech was re markably fluent. Tho only gestures ho inado wero with his left arm, and they were simple and graceful. The two great religions of Japan are Shinto and Buppo, or Shintoism and BuddhiHin. Shinto is supposed to be the ancient religion of Japan. The essenoe ot Hhintoism is anoc-stral wor ship, aud sacrifioe to departed heroes. The number of Shinto gods is enormous and variously estimated, but the reputed divine ancestress of the mikado, Tun Slio, Dai Jin, or Aims Jeraen o Migami, "great ^oddesa of the oelestial efful gonec," or "the heavenly illuminatiug spirit," is the chief and supreme. The Shintoista have very obscure notions about the immortality of the soul, a su preme Creator, or a future state of re wards and punishments. Their chief end, in opposition to the Buddhist*, is happiness in this lifo. In its precepts Shinto lays groat stress upon keeping the body pure with water, and the heart by prayer to the kaini or godH. Pilgrimages to sacred places and attendance upon the religious festivals are enjoined as duties. The three groat commandments issued by the Department of Religion in 1872, are as follows; 1. "Thou slialt honor the gods and love thy country. 2. Thou shalt clearly understand the principles of heaven and the duty of man. 3. Thou shalt revere the emperor as thy sovereign and obey the will of his oourt." In its higher torms Shinto is a cultured and intellectual deism; in its lower forms it oonsiBts in blind obedience to govern mental and priestly dictates. The sun and moon ore worshipped, and a num ber of inferior deitioa ure propitiated by prayers nnd the observance of certain rales of conduct, cleanliness of person and purity and eheei fulness of heart. In spite of the efforts and ordinances of the mikado who came into power in 1868 to make pure 'Shinto the religion of the ompire, the popular worship is that of Buddha.
