Hence, grass, weeds, ana other crops rowing among flax must be aroided. smooth ana even surface of the ground where flax grows is of great im portance when harvesting the crop. Hance, clods, sods, tuMOcks of grasa half decayed and numerous hollows should be avoided. The seed should be of prime and uniform quality, and be put into the soil at a shallow and uniform depth, so thst there may be a satisfactory uniformity in the length c f the stems. When a part of the seed iB barely oovered, and another portion is buried by the feet of a heavy team sev eral inches deep, the flat will be of un? equal height, and will not mature uni formly. 1 Henoe teams should never be allowed to travel oh land where flax seed has been sowed, unless the surface be so oompaet that the Beed will not be buried more than one inch in depth. The seed must be sowed with uniform evenness or the fiber will be of variable quality. The foregoing are the chief essentials. Now, then, the all-impor tant question is how to do the work. The cultivator has been told what to do times without number. But how to do it is a part of flax-raiding which has never seemed worthy of the notice of writers on flax culture. Water ahould on no account be allowed to drip from the eaves ; it is a great nuisance, undermining found step and rapid N destroying buildings. Air confined anywB^l, even in a clean room, becomes offensive, prob ably unhealthy, with a disagreeable smell or oloseness, and oonfined with filth in a drain or sewer, it must be in finitely worse. Drains built tight, with traps, etc., so that there is no ventila tion of their interior, generate very poisonous gases, whioh are ready on the occurrence of any Bmall leak to escape and poison everybody who happens to go near them. The best arrangement for ventilators in houses is to have a separate floe built in the chimney-stack expressly to reoeive the ventilator Sipes. Thus the air from the drain is lscharged high in the atmosphere in a position to be mixed with smoke ; and the noxious properties are destroyed, the smoke, whether of wood or ooal' containing abont the best chemical dis infectants known. In all parts of ^cw England hun dreds of people are dying every year of typhoid fever ; a large tract of the city of Boston is now building 'on made land, nearly as flat as the prairies about Chicago ; and in a few years it will doubtless have to be regraded and re built to get rid of this pestilence. From Maine to Pennsylvania there are flat undrained fields, and wet cellars, near ly as bad. All oyer the country further South, but principally in the Mississip pi and the flat country bordering tbo^ocean, tli? half-drained land is in fected with intermittent fever and the other malarial pestilenoes to suoh an extent as to destroy many thousands of people every year ; so that, in spite of constant immigration, extensive tracts of country are about as sparsely peo pled as they were when Pocahontas saved the life of John Smith. It was Ancixnt Custom of the Spartans, in ordsr to inculcate among heir youth an abhorrence of intemper ance and its kindred vices, to make their slav.es Jrunk with wine in the public market-places, so that the rising feneration, upon whom would jeme ay devolve the honor and safety of the. Laoedemomian Republic, might see before them all the ghastly details of the drunkard's disgraoe, his loss of rea son, and of physical strength. 'Twere well, perhaps, to-day, oould some of our young men oontemplate * -similar instructive lesson drawn from the life, showing therd, by a sharply drawn con trast, the advantages and true loveli ness of abstinenoe and virtue. . For such as appreciate these, Vnm Q?rt Bittkbs is the beverage best adapt ed, it being purely a vegetable draught, devoid of ajoohol or mineral poisons, and possessing all the virtues, but none of the damning etirses, of the different poisons whioh year by year are sweep ing away thousands of dollars and lives. t?Com* ? * -Expensive furniture ?
