A 1 Shortly after rbeir discovery, tliey were ordered by some gentlemen of the Town to "strike teyts," which they did, betaking themselves iu the direction of Uhcr-m True theso ncrsotts were not decteeted iu any very flagrant violations of the law, yet it is a singular m fact, as wo-are informed, that these identical fellows ? lrnve, for the last two or three years, been visiting our community. It matters not, however, whether they V be guilty or innocent, it behooves us as n people, to be vigilant, and drive all such suspicious characters' with the lash if necessary, from our midst, as were the ' tradesmen of old, from the Temple of the living God. ft*, i The Fusion iu New York. the fusion is now regarded a fixed fact, we think pertinent words can be said upon it. It means l',e ^wUed conservative men State, the anti-LixcOLX-ites, whether partisans of ?ell or BnECKLvnti'GE. In times like these, I^^S^^^^^Pesscntial that we weigh deliberately, and analyze ereT step taken by the North. In the midst the shadows of which arc now we are to be guarded in posiand not to be cajoled into has passed, and wiiiy - .* wliidi AefnstorJ^nlmlizatioa presents no parallel. = ^ ^ This fusion, then, is to be calmly considered, for tlio' under the gtiiso of patriotism, it may be selfish?the North and not the Soutli, its aim; fear, instead of love, luay urge it. The questions of interest, as connected uiiu il, arc, wuut arc jus oujecus :?wuut pnucipies i does it involve??and, in what light -should the South view it? Parties, like individuals, are governed by natives. No motive is stronger than that of power: i to secure it great efforts are made, and energies developed;, the patronage of office, is alone stimulating? the pride of maintaining it, equally so. "When, therefore, It is slipping their grasp, factions wil! go to any extreme to preserve it. These remarks are appropriate to this fusiou?power, and the spoils of office alone dictate . it i> Not love*of the country?for but seven electors out of the thirty-five represented true principles, whilst eighteen stand upon an unconstitutional platform, and the remaiuing ten are the representatives of a dangerous faction. Not a conservative spirit, or that spirit would have rallied the supporters of Dovglas to the majority platform in the Charleston and Baltimore Conventions, whilst Bell's party would not have existed ; for true , conservatism is, to he rioht. and to slick to it. To , take care of themselves, and prevent a possibility of ] diorupture, caused tliis fusion; to ell'ect it, they have poured their antithesis jjtfo a common reservoir, ir- \ regardless of platforms. iTue objects of the fusion aro j not generous or profuse, reaching to an affection for the , Constitution or aspect for the South?not of that pa- , .triotic hue, which abnegates sectionalism; these factions cannot forget the Xurth and themselves;?if it succeeds the State will go for Douglas, and as only the j three highest candidates can go into, the House, a prime object is to insure his going in. \ What principles does it involve ? a very plain one is, that the South | Is to expect naught from the North. Neither from Lincoln's irrepressible conflict, nor from the con-ervative < element. An ignoring of principle to insure or prevent j the triumph of any unrighteous pat ty, which the BltECK- | ixridge men have done (for Douglas and Bell are par nobile fralrum with Lincoln) should alienate the i South from tliem.p A vital principle cannot be valued, when they contribute to the success of a faction lioldi ing antagonistic views to themselves and to us, (their ( allies). Again, tliat (Northern selfishness, and not a < veneration for the Constitution, is the motive^ This is the result of the irreconeileable difference between the : two sections, which a change of social organisms , alone can harmonize.^ Sewaiid is correct: there is a t conflict, and affairs have progressed to this point, that t on}- party, to have success, must be secti -rial in principle. The struggle begun in 1S20?has culminated in t this, and to-doy, the battle of the sections is slavery or r no slavery,?State sovereignty, or centralization,?ergo any attempt by the North to conservative, must lie c upon a compromise of the rights of the other section, for '"ex necessitate,'' they cannot, in their minds (so antagonistic are they to us) admit our rights. In the language of Gov. McDuffie,?"When I heai a hoi them f man cry Union, metkinks Ihear the bugle blast of war." p Based upon and involving compromise, its principles ^ ..are those of more party expediency and selfishness; < fits activity, force and success, alike depend upon tliem, 0 and principles of justice, harmony, or a sincere desire for the cominuu weal, are foreign to their intentions. "AudJike the baseless fabric of a vision," they will dissi- r "pato wlien either defeated or successful. No party or fac- ^ ,tion can live in any government when its vitality is " ;but a temporary success; when it ignores those fun- 11 wI.L.I. nro l.-.ewl 11?. T sitios of society, or the conditions of government^ It should bo viewed by the South with distrust; she should take it ns no harbinger of returning justice, or '' ,of affiuitizing harmony; she must be preparing for the conflict. By this time she has learned the rottenness of Northern society; its enmity to herself, and t. from its conduct in the past that she can expect v pothirig for the future;?that if Constitutional provis- v ions, Congressional enact incuts, and a sense of duty. a fail to secure her riglits, fusions cannot.
