Out planters j should examine Mr. SiiivfcH's plough carefully, and if it has merits as an improvement in the agricultural depart- | . lent, patronize him. The only manner in which we | can stimulate home enterprise, and thereby render ourselves independent of the North, is by encouraging those in our midst, who arc industrious iu the development of our resources. Death of an Eidccmcd Citizen. "The King of Terrors" has again been in our [midst, niui has taken from us, no less a shining mark, than our esteemed friend and fellow-citizen. Mr. "William Anderson, of this place. In private life, as well as in his daily intercourse with his fellow men. Mr. Anderson" was one of the very best citizens of whom his little State could boast. He was modest, intelligent nnd unassuming, and above all. an '"Israelite indeed, in whom there was no guile."' He was a Jworking lneniber of the Presbyterian Church of Camden, and his example will long continue to he felt in our community ; what a contrast does the life of such a man present, to that of the profane, gambling, whiskey-drinking and worldly minded man! Peace be to his ashes. DvBow'ii Review for August. A new volume of tins now veteran Southern Monthly having just commenced, it is a fair time for new subscribers to record their names. AVe. nniong others, during the past week, visited the , rooms where a series of beautiful paintings, illustra- , tire of Buxyaxs Pilgrim's Progress, were on exhibition, and can truthfully say, that we have never before . enjoyed a richer intellectual feast. All- o! the paint- . ings, considered as works of art, arc good, but sonic of them cannot, in our opinion, be surpassed. The ] chief quarrel we have is with the last painting in the ( series?the one representing the Celestial Citythat wo think a failure. It is impossible for the artist, in a picture of that kind, wliete lie introduces us into its ( interior workings, to snrisfy the demands of the imagi- , nation, hence, he ought to keep it in the perspective as much as is consistent with the end to be obtain- . ed. . The TTashjxgtox Tableaux, exhibiting scenes of the American Revolution, will be exhibited to-night and ? ? 6 to-moiTOW night, at Temperauce Ilall. There will be t jin exiuanion ior cuuaren lo-morrow aiternoon at ;j "o'clock, at which time children will be admitted at 13 cenfcrcaeli. Owing to the bad weather there was no exhibition last night. _ The Cnlon and Our Policy. 1 "Our State has frequently been charged, by the lying c abolition presses ot the North, with being a disunion- li ist, "perse" a faetionist; whereas, in fuet, a baser fab- I i 'cation or more palpable falsbood, never was publish- s W government on earth contains subjects more I " 'Hajlc 0fSour!> t Of it?merely foRn^ratnTOff^^^^^^W^ ...r dishonoring desire of rutlrlqssly demolishing this gor]p} geous temple oi freedom?she would rather behold the ' Union of the Constitution, like the sun in the heaveus, , moving on in the splendour of her majesty, dispensing light and heat to the planets that revolve around her. Aye, more: she would-even now, rathersee the Union df the Constitution the focal center of other and fur-off systems, with those systems bound to her by the cords of fraternal affection and harmony, tliau any other State in the whole confederated Republic; and we dare say, would run greater hazards in protecting and sustaining it. But the Uuion of the Constitution no longer exists. It'is a mere bauble?a figment of tbe imagination?a thing that once was?now the patriot's dream. The government has become sectionalized. A power lias grown up within her borders, and crept into the councils of the nation, that is omnipotent for evil towards <us. The shibboleth of this power is the irrepressible j conflict of Seward; and should the Black Republican party succeed in the coming Presidential election?as it most assuredly will do?our doom will be Dually scaled, unless the South buckle on her armour and resist it to the death if necessary. The South has done all in her power to preserve the Union as it should be;?she lias made repeated sacrifices to uphold it:? _/ she has expended her blood and treasure in its behalf: .and more than all, she has repeatedly remonstrated with the Norte against her unwarrantable aggressions. Instead, however, of Southern renionstauces appeasing Northern wrath, they have served ouly to increase It, and fan their hatred into open hostility against us. Now we ask, does it become any Southern man, - baviDg the good of Ins section at heart, who loves the green mountains and beautiful plains of las sunny ? Soutli, redolent with the fragrance of the tree ofliber* tv, to sing psalms to tlio glorious Uuion? '"Curse on such perjured arts " VTVhat is the Union now, that any Southern man should love it? Is his property secure in it? Is his family secure in it? Arc the dear.est interests of his life secure in it ? No. alas! It is a Union with those who hate us. It is a Union with . tllOSC WHO Iiavc SUCKCU me pap UI uieir viiumy irum iis, and in return hath given us only a sting. It is a Union with those who have nullified the fugitive slave law, one of the best safe-guards to our rights of property. It is a Union with those who have excluded us from a participation iu the Territories, the common property of the government. It is a Union with those who have organised a sectional party to send down upon us the hell-hounds of a deadly sen ile war. AVe suspect the veracity of any true Southern man. who says that he loves the Union as it now is-JITe may con sent to tolerate it with the hope of bringing it back to -what it oucc was, and to wbut it should be, but to say that he loves it, we would as soon believe that the defenceless traveller, aware of the impending (Linger, loves the lion in his lair or the tiger in his jungle. The election of Lixcolx is almost certain, hence our policy is not to be chaDting tho praises of the glorious Union, but to cast about us to determine upon what course wo shall pursue in case he is elected. AA'e should not v?. .-wait for that event, before we begin to think of redistance, because then there will be less time and opportunity for reflection. Editorial Correspondence. The crops, the most fruitful topic of conversation at this season, are deplorably bad in this section, and I fear past hope. Those who are spared to see the next voar, will witness, I apprehend, one of unprecedented scarcity and suffering, especially among that class of our fellow-citizens who are entirely dependent upon their annual productions for support. They also found documentary evidence showing a wide-spread conspiracy. implicating prominent Republicans at the North and, while I write, three more persons arc undergoing an examination before the citizens, committee in our neighboring cit.v. A call appeared this morning for a public meeting in our town this evening. God only knows what is to be the result; but I do hope that every abolition emissary may be caught and made to suffer the just penalty of his crimes in death. It is true that it may seem hard to hang a man without judge or jury; hut when the lives of our families tire at stake?when those that are most dear to us are in danger or being not only murdered in cold blood, but perhaps to meet a worse fate, then it is time to take the law iuto our own hands, and to protect our families. ' I have just returned, since writing the above, from our town meeting, where we organized a committee of safety, of which I was appointed chairman, and have suuuiiond four or five persons before us to night, and 1 think, from the standing of the committee, that there will bo no rash steps taken, but their course will be marked with moderation and justice. I have just learned that a white woman was shot by a slave, twelve miles south of this place, and afterwards was ravished. The negro, I presume, was burned at the stake ou that night. 1 will write soon. '13. F. BARKLEY."
