' ' . Our neighbor-of tlio Southern Guardian. at Columbia, is perfectly correct in the inferences drawn from the result of this election, and very truthfully and significantly remarks that "Connecticut in her business and manufacturing in- ' terests, would be .among the heaviest sufferers in the event of a dissolution of the' Union, or the withdrawal of Southern custom, and yet-her people have braved the risk, and defiantly cast their suffrages for that party whose triumph will lead to this very state of things.? ' Tllfy have done this in the face of an existing state of affairs which might well huve. induced them to pause, whatever might have been their ultimate determinatidh. Secondly, the candidate whom they have beaten was the inost popular man in the State. 11c was able, fearless and honest in his political opinions and convictions. This is a striking evidence of the- strength of fanaticism, and the deep hold it has taken among the people of that section. "Lastly, in no canvass of recent uiay have such exertions been put Ibrth to defeat the Republican party. Tlieprwtiyc of this election was contended for nshaving an important influence on the Presidential contest, and tho ablest men of the DiunoGratie party have- been sent as missionaries, or voluntarily- given their services, in taking an activo part iu the canvass. Their most gifted orators ana prominent men ? nave own delivering speeches-for the lost month or two to mass meetings everywhere in the State.' '* But all hn3 been in vain ! Fanaticism has triumphed., and has thus again given .The people of the South to understand that the war is to be unceasing, and the conflicts irrepressible. A ly\v more elections with similar results, may perhaps bring conviction homo to the minds of all, that the hope. of any reaction in favor of the constitutional rights of "the South is futile and vain."' To sum up tho whole, it is the best and cheapest route for a Rail Road, of tho length, iii the State ; the distance from Georgetown to Lancaster, by an air line being about l.'iO or 1-10 miles.'1 We have supposed that the object of the Lancaster people was to form a Rail lload connection with Charleston, hut if Georgetown is more desirable wc have certainly labored under a serious misapprehension in rugiiru i?? iiiu uvm, mm mum ujuuiuu. iiiuuaiv pniuucable and feasible route to the seaboard, from the upcountry of our section. Thirty-five miles between Camileu and Lancaster can connect the two places, over one of the best routes in the world for a Kail Road. The enhanced price of land for miles, 011 -cither side ol the track, would more than pay for it. The pine timber alone woidd pay for it; the Turpentine which could be produced along the route would pay for it twice over; and there are many incidental advantages which would result directly from the building of such a Road, connecting at this point with the South Carolina Rail Road. However, we do not intend to arguo sueli a palpable proposition; there arc those along the -outo more immediately interested, whose pecuniary welfare would be promoted largely by such a move? if tltey want the Road let tlieni give the necessary en 4- o.wl 41,? w ill ].?, .Inn.. If tlie people of Lancaster prefer a connection with the North-Eastern Road via Rishopviile, he it so; in our humble judgment thut is not the host route, and it would he a singular idea to' attempt to build u Rail Road connecting with the North-Eastern Road, which would require a million and a half of dollars, or thereabouts, when las than 'half llint amount would connect them at Camden with a Road in successful operation. and which would insure a direct connection with Charleston, Augusta, Columbia, At.
