On Friday last, by invitation of the proprietor of the Mansion House, our locvm teneni lent his feeble appetite to the very agreeable task of assisting in despatching a good-sized ltoek-Fish?weighing 15 pounds. It was served in good style, as the rapidity with which it disappeared best attests. A Fin* Treat. An old and long esteemed frieud sends as a fine lot of nice vegetables, including green peas, spring turnips, lettuce, and Straw-berries. Such practical demonstrations are peculiarly gratifying. Our friend is a modest man, a practical utilitarian, who would not perhaps like to see his name in the jmpers, yet is fond of doing a good thing now and then for the editor ? He is a sensible man, and we do not wonder that he Hueceeds so well in having a good garden. Ills seed are generally obtained at the Post-Office, where 'The Old Priuter,"' keeps a good supply on hand. Election for Brigadier General. The following is the result of the election for brigadier General to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Gen. W. J. Taylou:? Col. Waiaack, Col. For several weeks we have missed among our exchanges a highly prized and valuable oue, which wo have heretofore noticed in somewhat flattering terms? not however more tlian it deserves. We are at a lo"s to account for the repeated failures of the G'.orgia Temperance Crusader, one of the very best papers that we get. What can the matter bo Brotlier Seals? Surely you have not ceased to wage war against the enemy oi all mankind ? We know the fact that your l>amascus blade is still unsheathed, and is dealing heavy blows upon the hydra-headed monster, and yet we are not among its favored readers.? Surely you do not mean to cut our acquaintance ?? that cannot, must not be. Let us hear from you soon brother Crusader. T Chang* of Location. Wo cannot but regret to see from tin; last Carolina Bulletin, that our sprightly and interesting little neighbor, has ceased its publication in Columbia, having ae ,?t??ii iJES- > a I? . Wo take pleasure in asking attention to our column of Charleston Advertisements, on the fourth page of our jmper. We call special notice to tho Card of Messrs. Tlio Salt Nonce of our frieud, Mr. James Armstboxo ?who has, also, a busiuess Card in our paper?should attract attention from the very great inducements which are offered, in the large supply of this useful, and at all times seasonable article. The Normal Female High School is worthy of special attention, and we trust its very great importance will Ik* duly appreciated by all interested?and who is not?in the subject of education ? The public Schools, male and female, are monuments of honor to the old ' Queen City." They will be sustained. The Charleston Mercury, W'c are gntitied to note the continued improvement in this old and influential States Rights Journal. As i n neves paper, it is now one of the very lx>st. Its tvpographienl arrangements are most admirable, and we do not hesitate to say, that it is now conducted in every department, now* miscellaneous, editorial 1c., with ai. ability which we have not seen liefore. Some of its leaders would do credit to the first minds in the State. The Mercury has always occupied hiyh Southern ground?not too high?and may Ik? regarded as the leader in the vanguard of Southern Rights. At ouo time within the past year, it was thought by some that the Mercury was moderating, coining down, and this, ii. .so. pcrnaps was pruuein. oui iu imagine uiai me Charleston Mercury, would abandon its time honored principles?the truths find doctrines taught by Carolina's great teacher?would lower its colore and trail them In tlie ?lust oftni-<c submission. or ever compromise to ' moral victories" and tlu* popular clap-trajis of National I>eniocracy. would be to suppose a very iniprotiahlc state of things. The Mercury teaches wisely that the South should 1*? united for the sake of the South; nud surely we ought to be a unit ere this iqsm those vital questions which so directly affect our rights, interests, and very existence. But, the crisis is coming?will eoiuo?-must come?when the South will Ik* obliged to unite, or else basely desert her own heritage. Northern cupidity rind abolition intolerance will not stay its hand as long 0* on inch of ground can bo Welted from the South.? The time is at hand when even ' moral victories" can jro longer bn gained by the South.
