Goodrich, to which steam power was attached, and must say that it is one of the most complete simple and durable machines we have ever seen in use for the purpose of making shin , gles. The frame is of cast iron, and made verystrong. The block to be split is placed on the bed or platform from which arises, at every revolution, a common frow, which takes off a straight shingle of any required thickness and from wood which could not he easily split with the hands by frow and mallet. This square shingle then drops on a bottom plate, where the top plate, on which it wjfci first > -.t -i . < i ?..n? piaceo, moving wun me now, iioin.on.uiuj, acts as a driver; and while the second block is being taken otT by the fl ow, the first is driven through a pair of common knives, which open by an eccentric, to receive the bi^t of the shingle;rthese knives then close gradually bringing the shingle to a point. The shingle then passes through two common rollers, and is taken to a jointer, in front of the machine, where it is evenly jointed as fast as the wood can be split. This machine, operated on with steam or horse power, can make '2000 perfect shingles within the hour, a trood hour's work for tweti ty hands. It can be worked also bv band power, and will do good work. The only attendance required is a splitter, a feeder, and a jointer. It is, as we said before, very simple and durable in its construction, and can be kept in order by any common blacksmith. The whole machine is operated on by an on off band wheel to which is attached a fly wheel to give it steadiness of motion. To the shaft is attached cog wheels, which operate on driving shafts of wrought iron.
