r ^ntfrij. i FEBRUARY. Month of gloomy mist and shower, Do they Rill thee Spring's first born ? Thou hasl not a single flower On thy uaked thorn. Rugged TVisteu is thy sire, Twas he that gave thee birth: And bade, in his bitter ^e, Prolong his sway on earth. i : Dark as thy features are; Sad as is thy sullen eye; And, like the plaint of pining care, The wailing of thy sigh: I And, yet, upon thy cloud}* brow, A shadowy light appears, And a soft smile is gleaming now, Amidst thy streaming tears And, half concealed upon thy breast, A precious gem is seen, The flowret with its snowy crest, And slender stem of green. Month of gloomy mist and shower, "Welcome, then, since tlion dost bring. A promise of tljp sunny hour, A tokfn of the Spring. Igriroltiirnl. [From the Soil of '.he South.] KettlewelE's Salts and Guano. Messrs. Editors:?As the science of agricultural chemistry ?as it stands related t?> the ameliorating process of the soil, is host illustrated by the results of actual experiment, al low me t<? present through y^jur c< ( 'inns my observation and treatment of the soil with Kettlewell's Salts and Guano. The land treat- , <id was piney woods, which had been cleared | 1 and cultivated for twelve years, and being originally of but ordinary fertility, was upon the verg^ of utter sterilty. I measured one acre each for corn and cotton. The treatment of the acre set apart for corn, was as follows: On the 12th day of February i broke up jp the grortnd deeply and closely with a long | scooter plow. Ap.il 12;h, the Salts and Gu-' ano to the amount of 350 ihs. were sowed i broad cast, and turned under with a turning i shovel, after which th^ C"ru rows were laid oH ? five feet apart, the corn planted in the drill and covered with a board. Oil the 28lli day , of April, the corn was replanted. A slight I shower of rain fell on tile 8th day ol May, which was the only one from the date of the planting. On the* 14th of May plowed thoroughly and deeply with a turning plow, and on the lGth thinned the corn to 30 inches in the drill, and herd it out nicely. On the 30th of May, a tolerable good rain aga n fell. On 1 Jibe 0th of June, plowed with a -h<?vel with 1 double wings. June hi li, had a the season, and on June the 12th had another good suk son, when the giouud was stirred with a coin moo winged sweep. Good seasons occurred on the 2d, 4ti? and 12th of July, followed by good rains throughout the balance of the corn making'season. From this acre of ground, on* the 5th day of October, {gathered 21 bushels of we 1 matured corn, whilst from 5 acres of similar laud adjoining in the same ficid, but uiiuiaiiured, I only gathered 3G bushels of short com, or in the vernacular of the farmer, "nubbins." So much tor the experiment of the culture of corn. On the 5lh day of April, the acre set apart for cotton, was deeply and thoroughly broken with a long scooter plough April 18th, the ground was laid off in four equal plats of 1 4 acre each, numbered 1,2, 3, 4. On the number 1 sowed 18 3 4 lbs. of Salts and Guano combined, with 25 lbs. Gypsum; on number 2 sowed 50 lbs; on number 3 02 1 2 lbs., and on number 4 75 lbs?being at the rate of 150 'bs. per acre on number 1; 200 lbs. on nuinj Eber 2 ; 250 lbs on number 3 ; and 300 lbs .on number 4, per acre. Plut number 1 contained IB rows; number 2, 3 and 4, 14 rows each' The whole acre was tlien carefully bedded up with a turning shovel. Ap'il 19th, opened the ! beds with a short scooter plow, and planted the cotton seed, covering lighly with a board, May the 16th sided the cotton deeply with a j turning plow, when lice began to make their appearance on the young plants. May 17th and 18th, hoed first time. May 23d plowed deeply and closely with a long broad scooter si" plow. No rain had fallen since the 8th of Kay, and t^jp weather from the 19th very cool, ^ the-thermometer ranging at 5.a. m. and 7 p. m. from' 58 to 65 degrees, and the lice in the ineantinie committing fearful ravages, /unc 13th, plowed with common sweeps, throwing a small quantity of soil to the plants ; the weather was now very fine, but the plants not growing by reason of the lice, ''whoso name was ftn.l i 1 .i . i , E legion." J tine ^.>a, n??eu ana mimica 10 a stand, fay 20 inches in the drill; the lice had j now left, ami the plants were beginning to j ^ grow. June 25th, first bloom. June 20th, ( plowed with sweeps. July 15th, plow^l with ' sweeps. July I8tit, hoed and laid by the crop. October 20th, the erop was fuily gathered, and yielded as follows: 5 , Number 1, 253 lbs. number 2.240 lbs.; ( number 3.250 U??.; number 4, 278 lbs.; mak- | ing a total for the acre of 1,021 lbs. seed cot- < ton. From these fij. ures, it will he discovered that there was a gradual increase of production j in proportion to the (jnanl'ity of Salts and (Juano used, except number.l, which yielded more i than numbeis 2 and 3. which result, no doubt, transpired from the addition on that plat of gypsum, at the tate of 100 pounds per acre. The seasons were as indicated in the experiment on corn. Having thus detailed the mode of culture ! and application of the salts and guano, and I the results, 1 have only to add, that 1 have been : much gratified with my experiments, and feel great confidence in the opinion, that the addition of the inorganic matter of Kettlewcll's f^alts to the stimulating properties of the gu^? ano, has secured, at least to our light sandy oils, a rich, cheap and permanent means of j i- . \'? f Cll 11 V ?W It?ruiiZitu?m.
