Guauo and Cotton Culture. Recent accounts from Peru inform us that extensive beds of guano have lately been found, - ' I .. a; I I _ I A 7 which are said to oe nearly intwnauswute. n (is to be hoped that this information will prove well founded, for nothing is wore needed in this country than a full supply of a highly con centrated manure which may be cheaply transported far into the interior, and sold at a price that will enrble all cultivators of our great commercial staples to purchase and use it at a profit. We can not long continue to export so many millioti tons of cotton, tobacco, giain and provisions, every year, from our farms, and not exhaust their elements of fertility. The injury done to the land is not less when cotton, Sour and meat sent froiu the South and West, are consumed in New England, than it would'bo if they were exported to Europe. % What all our arated fields demand is a full and perfect restitution ef the atoms removed bytillage and in the crops harvested, so fur as air and water fail to supply them. Guano'now promises the most available resource for obtaining the raw material needed for the economical growth of cotton ; but the market price of the article must he greatlv reduced before cotton planters can be large consumers of this imported manure. The monopoly of the Peruvian government should he extinguished by purchase or otherwise, for the equal benefit of our agrculture, commerce and manufactures. Let every known deposit oi bird manure in all the i-lands of the sea be freq to the commerce of the world, and the price of cotton and o'her important staples would soon I.e governed in a good degreo by that of guano. Every member of Congress and other public servants at Washington, should be duly notified of the importance of cheap guano to the great agricultural interest; and this interest ought to be far more felt and respected by all legislative and executive bodies than it now is. Farmers might easily prevent tbecoutinuaticeof that spendthrift policy which now compels-them to draw so constantly on the soil as a fixed capita!, and prevents their making adequate restitution for the funds ab stracted. Every intelligent planter must see thut 110 capital can long endure this ceaseless drain on its limited amount. Such planting i.aiike injuiious to the public and the land under cultivation. Probably the guano to be importedit) the uextsix months will exceed in quantity that brought into the country in any previous twelve, months Sixty-fivo vessels are said to he laden, or about to be, at one group of is lands with this manure for Amer ican consurnp lion; so great is the demand for the precious food for plants. The ocean is full of it, but its cheap extraction is yet to be discovered by the growing necessities of the present, or afu ture age. Every stream that runs into the sen carries with it some of the earthy constituent.of crops; and down to the sea man must gc for his ridlest and cheapest manure, as the .1,, lo iiiaYliiill<ilih||i. MJpJ'M (KCIC II II kit liivouio- .. .... Between sea-water and a cotton shirt there is a very ch>-e affinity ; anil yet how lew men who wear shots made of eotton, and how few of their wives clothed in the same material, see the intimate relation that subsists between the various salts ot the ocean an I the great staple of the South? Most persons know that tin oyster i* nutritions food, and that it giows in salt water; but why this same oyster yields a manure woith ten or twenty times more than that of a pig fed on corn, of a like weight, howfew understand? 1*is>h are the food of birds w bos > excrements constitute . ommercial guano ; and fish themselves have been used for indefinite ages to foitiiize the giound cultivat?.-d by mun. But 100 pound* of dang formed nsznaiMsanBaaaBaBnMasMaenHKsaa^bsnn exclusively of fish, dry weight, is worth two or three handred pounds t?f the same fish for ma sure before they were eaten by birds. This is an important fact, and one that points to the why goano is so valuable. Fish part with a large share of their carbon and elements of ?? w&lkr in the systems of birds that digest the in, , so that foor hundred pounds of fish, dry ! weight, yield only one hundred pounds of dry i gnano. The latter contains nejuly all the ni! trogen and plr.wphiites, sdda, lime, and mag:ie; ! sia, which the fish posssed ; while the torn bus tfWe earh<m anil hydr o<fen in the fKh were literally burnt in the bodies of the birds to keep fbeni warm. In this war nature concentrates fertilisers, and thereby wreath1 facilitates their ! cheap and extensive distribution for agriculj ttiral purposes. It hits long appeared to ns ; "trange indeed that American farmers do not j offer a fair remunerating reward to the man j who will make an improvement in the known processes for deodorising and concentrating ; the fecal matters that so abound in all cities, i Farmers, and partieulaily cotton planters, need rich and cheap manure, while they do next to nothing to obtain it. They uniformly turn their backs to nun of science, who, with a little encouragement, would very cheerful ly labor all their lives to advance the l>esl interests of farmers." Who would readily believe that the great State of Georgia, so strictly an agricultural Cemnumwealth, cannnot af- j j ford to employ so much as one man of science to devote who could his whole time and ; talents te enlarge, by original researches the hounds of her agricultural knowledge ? If rural literature is never cultivated, if the owners | of the soil constantly reject the means for sub- j slantial progress in tillage and husbandry, how ' I can they reasonably expect any benefits from ! science, or any advancement in their knowledge of the true principles of agriculture ? We put the question plainly, hut most respectfully. I How many years longer ought Georgians to j j wait before they begin to cultivate and cs- j 1 teem agricultural sciences as worthy of pul>i lio rp/ritrrl ? 'i "v *, ~ ? # I I The science of extracting manure from the ' subsoil and the atmosphere, from springs, brooks, rivers and the wean, will be worth many millions a year to her people, if they \vi 1 only fairly introduce the science into every country. Knowledge is the parent of all our wealth. And yet, the most valuable agricultural knowledge in the woild has no Mends in America to foster its strength in its infancy, j and bring its rich fruits to full maturity. Why i I itrangie at its birth the most promising offspring, and then revile the parents because their child appears'Still born!" Science can-1 not work miracles; nor can it serve the public without the food you so freely give to a laboring ox or mule. To understand the relation of things in agriculture, they must be taught, they must be studied. We commenced this article with the intention of discussing the relation that 100 pounds! of guano bears to a like weight of merchanta lde cotton ; but from the lack of experimental farms at the South, from a general unwilling ; ness to investigate the true connection that ; subsists between manures and crops, between I guano and cotton, we find on research that; j there are no data on which to base a sound ar ! j gument. While we are happy to obtain rclia-1 ; b'e and useful facts in every legitimate way, | j God forbid that our editorial duties shall ever ; lead us to manufacture lliern. Looking to the I best interests of the cotton growing Slates, j and speaking plainly on a most important sub-1 ject, we. believe that planters had better pur I chase guano at present prices to increase the fruitfulness of their farms, instead of investing their money in more negrrn s the sooner to in) poverish the best arable lands of the sunny South. Lahoiing hands are valuable; we have never said a word to their disparagement; but knowledge is more valuable than any mere physical powers possibly can be. It must con control, wisely or foolishly, all physical agencies on every plantation, if this be true, then j we stibiuii that plantation knowledge deserves | systematic cultivation from year to year, quite ! I as much as the plantation itself. A person is j | no more born wise than the germ in a cotton j i seed unaided can produce three hundred bolls ; filled with the best lint. The planter is i himself subjected to natural laws, not less than his soil, his Agricultural plants, his domestic animals and his servants ; and as all these laws emanate from ono and the same great LawGiver, to study and obey them is the highest wisdom i f tho farmer.
