When you meet with one suspected Of some secret deed of shame, And for this by all rejected As n thing of evil fame; Guard thine every look and action, Speak no word of heartless blame, For the slanderer's vile detraction Yet may soil thy goodly name. When yon meet with one pursuing Ways tho lost havo entered in, Working out his own undoing, With his recklessness and sin; Think, if placed in his condition, Would a kind word be in vain? Or a look of cold suspicion Win thee back to truth again? There's n spot that bears no flowers, Not because tho soil is bad, But the Summer's gonial showers Never make their blossoms glad: Better have an act that's kindly, Treated sometimes with disdain, Than by judging others blindly, Doom the innocent to pain. Like many celebrated characters, of] maturer years, who, like himself, had been sentenced to the gallows, Pomoroy, the boy murderer, has written n history of his life. Unlike, however, the other noted criminals who wrote to excite tho wonder and admiration of posterity, Pomeroy has evidently taken to author? ship as a means of saving his neck. He denies all his previous statements, and makes himself out a very white-souled little angel. We hope tho Governor ofl Massachusetts will not bo cruel enough to rob him of the martyr's crown. The State of Tennessee is in trouble. The Treasurer, Sir. Morrow, states that I there is not enough money to pay the July interest, and it is not probably there will bo enough to pay tho January interest. The State will, therefore, havo to default. There is a good deal of feel? ing among tho people at the unfortunate state of affairs, and an extra session of the Legislature is suggested?though it is not clear that it could do any thing to help matters. It should be remembered that Profes? sor Donaldson has been pronounced I ' 'killed" five times during the pnBt two | or three years, but has invariably come; to life again. Ho is an advertiser of his rerial proclivities, and, as Barnum says, he |might have dropped into tho Michi? gan pineries, and is under cover for a few days?just to get tho peoplo to in? quire about him and '"talk him up."
