BY JULIAN A. SELBY Quite a dispute is going on iu the Northern papers as to whether Col. Prescott or Gen. Putninn commanded the colonists at Bunker Hill. It seems doubtful if anybody was in command that day in the modern sense. Every man fought on his own hook, and at the third charge, having been overpowered by numbers, a retreat was in order. The event was celebrated, notwith? standing the uncertainty about the iden? tity of the commanding officer. "When Paul Boyton is at sea ho looks like a miniature steamship, full-rigged. His body and the floating apparatus rep? resent the hull, his head the prow, his toes turned up (ho lies on his back) the stern end, the sail ho carries the rigging, and his cigar the smoke-stack. The idea of the existence of Balm in Gilead is simply a popular error and hallucination; otherwise some enterpris? ing agent would have contracted for the advertising of that specific, at the loicest rates, long ago. The brass in the column of Vcndomc is n thin mixture compared to the metal? lic "cheek" of the Plymouth pastor. His latest discourse was on the "methods of growth in Christian character."
