by julian a. selbt Maiuued Coui-i.es?How to Teil Them.?If you see a lady and gen? tleman disagree upon trifling occa? sions, or correcting each other in company, you may be assured they have tied the*matrimonial noose. If you Bee a silent pair in a car or stage, lolling carelessly, one at each window, without seeming to know they have a companion, the sign is infallible. If yott see a lady drop her glovo, and a gentleman by the side of her kindly telling her to pick it up, you need not hesitate in forming your opinion. "If you meet a couple in the fields, the gentleman twenty yards in advance of the lady, who, per? haps, in getting over a stilo with great difficulty, or picking her way through a muddy patch; or, i If you see a lady whose beauty and accomplishments attract the attention of every lady and gentle? man in the room but one, you can have no difficulty in determining their relationship to each other? the one is her husband. If you see a gentleman particu? larly courteous, obliging and good matured, relaxing into smiles, say? ing sharp things, and toying with every pretty woman in the room, excepting one, to whom he appears particularly cold and formal, and is unreasonably cross-?who that one. is nobody can be at a loss to dis? cover. If you see an old couple jarring, checking and thwarting each other, differing ih opinion before the opi? nion .is expressed, eternally antici? pating and breaking the thread of eaoh other's discourse, yet using kind words, like honey bubbles floating on vinegar, which, are soon overwhelmed by a preponderance of the fluid; they are, to all intents, man an ? wife! it is impossible to be mistaken. The rules above quoted are laid down as infallible ? just interpre? tation?they may be resorted to with con fid once; they are upon un? erring principles, and deducted from every day experience. The tobacco crop of the States South and West of Pennsylvania is sot down as having been 29-1,000 hogsheads in the year 1873, and 114,000 hogsheads in 1874, in re? spect to which it is, observed that the prospect of so large a reduction in 1874 naturally: led to an active speculation, and prices, in a very short time, advanced fully 100 per cent., which has been maintained to the present, time, the price of Kentucky leaf tobacco having been 14 to 25 cents per ponnd April 30, 1875, as against 7$ to 12 cents per pound May 1, 1874, which extraor ? dinary advance checked exports, and reduced purchases by home manufacturers to the lowest limits. This reduction in the crop was caused by the prolonged drought. In 1873, Kentucky produced 118, 000 hogsheads, and in 1874, only 30,000. In 1873, Virginia produced 02,300 hogsheads, and in 1874 only 35,000. In 1873, Ohio produced 25,800 hogsheads, and in 1874 only 4,000. Indiana and Illinois de? clined from 37,000 to 10.000, and Missouri from 20,000 to 10,000. Maryland, suffered less than any, only declining from 31,500 to 25, 000.
