_ gJLjg BY JULIAN A. SELBY. An Eastern paper makes fun of, the old story, a revival of which, by I a French newspaper, was cabled lately, that the Pope is considering the possibility of his rcsidenco in the United States. The Pope's American friends, says our ex? change, if they aro wise, will warn the Holy Father against becoming an immigrant to this country. In the antiqne seclusion of the Vatican he is a spiritual potentate, a. suc? cessor of St. Peter, and an infallible sovereign of the Church. Here ho would have to pay a poll tax, give his name to the street directory compilers, be interviewed by re? porters, read the Beecher trial, and ?horrible thought?possible bo defendant in legal proceedings him? self. "What sanctity, divinity or infallibility could hold out against sucn leveling influences as these? Think of the Pope receiving pro? posals from an American "lecture bureau," or neglecting to have his sidewalk cleaned, or being nomi? nated for Congress, or riding in a street car. His Holiness will bIiuu the disillusion which awaits him here. Of all places in the world, Naples is about the last where one Would look for a land speculation on the American plan; yet here wo have in L'llalie, a Roman newspaper, a magnificent prospectus, with a view of the bay, as one sees it ou drop curtains, a plan of the new streets laid out "in the most beautiful quarter of Naples," and an an? nouncement of 75,000 metres of land to be sold "in largo or small lots." The land, we are told, is admirably situated, commanding a fine view of Mount Vesuvius, and so forth, and so forth, and houses can be built there at a moderate price, with, all the modern conve? niences. This is progress, certainly. Only think of the lazzaroni going in for eligible corner lots. 0) ?+?i Among the papers of a Capuchin monk, who has jnsfc died, was found the following will: "I bequeathe, first, to the Abbe Micbaud my bre? viary, because he does not know his own; . second, to M. Julius Favre my frock, to hide his shame; third, to M. Gambetta my cord, which will prove useful one day round his neck; fourth, to M. Thiers his own work, that he may read it over again, and fifth, to France my wallet, because she may shortly have occasion for one to collect alms." A young man with a speculative optic called at an insurance office in Indianapolis, the other day, und asked what a policy on his mother's life for $2,000 would cost. He ex? plained that he had bought some real estate, and that as future pay? ments would crowd him some, he thought to realize enough on the old lady's death, as she could not live long, to help him out. The .insurance man advised him not to stop at any half measures, but sr cure the old lady's skeleton us well and dispose of it to one of the medical colleges. A patent has been taken out for an invention which it is claimed that glass can be used as building material for house fronts, floors or pavements, superior to marble in durability and economy. It may be mode plain or variegated, and its colors are in destructible. ?MMwa^wM^aaaiawMiri ? sMjj j i 11 ..l Hthawbemiv FEBTtvAt;--Tho straw? berry festival at ,$rwihV Hall, Thursday and ^rjday evenings, promises to be something nice and palatable.
