BY JULIAN A. SELBY A Centenarian.?Even Sir George Cornwall Lewis himself, wc think, must "give in" to the Baron Wal? deck. If that remarkable old man was not 109 years old when he died, there is no means of knowing how old anybody is, for the record of Waldeck's birth at Prauge, on March 16, 1776, is as good a record as we aro accustomed to ask, and his claim to the title of a centena? rian is quite equal to M. Thier's claim to be called an octogenarian, which nobody disputes. M. Thiers has been before the public from a time to which the memory of man runneth not to the contrary, but Waldeck was heard of before that. Ho was in Africa with Le Vaillant, and Le Vaillant returned to Paris from his remarkable explorations in 1785; ninety years ago. Ho was a pupil of David, who has been half a century in his grave. He was with Napoleon in Egypt, with Lord Cochrane in Chili, he tra? veled in Central America and Mexi? co when these countries were little known to Europeans, and as long ago as 1826 the Government gave him an annuity of 2,000 francs for some of his pictures, rather than pay him 40,000 francs, which was thought too high a price. It was not only the Director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, by the way, that Waldeck got the better of; he had a seat at the opera which he had bought for the rest of his life, and which he occupied for about two ordinary lifetimes, to the infinite chagrin of the management. In? deed, people who invested on the chances of the old man's death found their investment a poor one, and used to say of himself that, as he had long survived the .period when men usually die, and kept his faculties unimpaired, there was no apparent reason why he should-not live forever. He kept on painting pictures and writing elaborate work archaeology almost to the day of his death, while the young men who grew up about him were gathered in to their graves. Only think of a man who had known Mario Antoinette before her marriage; who had seen her glory and her fall;, who had walked and talked with Danton, Robes? pierre and Marat; who had served with Napoleon, who, from his stu? dio in Paris, had seen pass before his eyes the First Empire, Lonis XVIII and the monarchy of July, the revolution of February and tho Second Empire, the 4th of Septem? ber, the Commune and M. Theirs, I and who waited with the same in? difference to see MacMahon also pass away. "I am the only phe? nomenon of my kind," he said; "like Buddha, I contemplate my? self alone." It would need the pen of a Hawthorne to do justice to such a history; but it is not a history that one can covet, though old "Waldeck appears to have found very little of the sadness in it that Hawthorne would have dwelt upon. But Waldeck was a Parisian, and a cosmopolite. [Philadelphia Times Far Western newspapers may not present to the world obituary notices possessing the smothness and alliterative melody of the pro? ductions which make the grave a refuge in the East, but they have pith and energy in the Occident. Not long ago, a tremendous explo? sion occurred in 'San Francisco, caused by the carelessness of a single individual, and resulted in the death of several persons! After the accident came the newspaper comments, of course, nnd thus one journal pleasantly suggests an epi? taph for the man who caused the sad disaster: The explosion which 'co?t so * many persons their lives $}vas caused by a spark from a pipe, which the man Clark was smoking, dropping into some powder. They need not look for Clark's brains; but when they get fche reBt' of him together thoy ought to bury the fragments in u prominent square, nnd erect over them a monument I containing the inscription: "Sacred to the memory of a d?d fool!" "While on the subito1., we may as well mehtio? that the Presbyterian church in this and other countries number about 8,500,000 souls. Apr 20 tu4 The symptoms of Liver Complaint are uneasiness and pain in the side. Some? times the pain is in the shoulder, and is mistaken for rheumatism. The stomach is affected with loss of appetite and sick? ness, bowels in general costive, and sometimes alternating with lax. The bead is troubled with pain, and dull, heavy sensation, considerable loss ol memory, accompanied with painful sen? sation of having left undone something which ought to have been done.
