? I > - -1-1-'?--r?? BY JULIAN A. SELBY. Too Poor to Take a Newspaper. An anecdote is told of a former going one day to the office of a New York journal and ordering his paper stopped, because he was too poor to take it any longer. "Suppose we make a bargain," said the editor, "in this .way. Go home and seleet a hen that shall be called my hen; sell the eggs that tho hen lays during the year, and send the proceeds to me as your subscription for the paper." The fanner was pleased at so easy a way to pay for his paper, and readily consented. . The result was, that doing the year the hen paid for the paper twice its regular price of subscription. This is by no means a pure fic? tion, for the same may be true in a groat multitude of oases. Almost every'one wastes and throw away more than enough money during tho year to get a weekly or daily newspaper that would furnish him with intellectual food, and keep him posted in the busy, stirring events of the day. A very small retrenchment in the luxuries that almost every one indulges in would secure a' da?y visitor full of gossip about tho doings of the great world around us; full of stirring events in the history that is every day being made in our own coun? try, and full of .useful general in? formation, and facts iu literatures, science, and art. Besides it is the duty of the .people to support the press, for it has always stood as a grand bulwark between them and political end military oppres? sion; it has Bounded the notes of warning that has often aroused them to action; it has stripped the borrowed cloak from corruption and venality iu high places, and showed them in all I heir deformity, and is to-day the great friend of education, justice, religon and peace. The press speaks every? where, at all times, carrying light in places where othewise perpetual darkness would reign. And when we remember what the World would be without the press?how dark? ness, ignorance, vice and oppression would flourish unopposed?let no] one %vty longer say that he is too poor to take a newspaper. Tue MvaTEWEs of the Female Toilette..-?The Pall Mall Gazette says: "The latest novelty in wo? man's attire does not sound com? fortable. She has, it seems, adopted a garment in which it is almost impossible to walk or to sit down) or to enter a carriage, and which can only be worn by throw? ing the body into the most painful contortions according to instruc? tions specially given by the dress-makers who manufacture it The Paris correspondent of the Queen gives the following account of' this new article of dress. 'Demi-trains/ says the correspond? ent, 'are inconvenient for the street and even for getting into a carriage, and they are so tied back and banded with elastic that walking* and, above all, sitting down are not the easy, careless movement of yore. Some dress? makers give instructions as to the management of these demi-trains. The best manner to gathering up the train is to turn to the right, bending fdightlv- backwards, and to take hold of 'the dress as low down, as possible with the right hand. When you straighten and stand trpright again the skirt will bo slightly lifted, and thus become no ? longo* than a short coei,?me. When you wish to let the skirt trail again yon must throw it back with the fffifo of the right hand. This will be found a much more graceful way of preserving the train from contact with the streets than by lifting it on each side with the hands;' Man dressed in a coat or a pair of trousers involving' so much trouble and agony would hardly feel Hp to preforming those duties which woman kindly pro? pose to take on her own hands; she is, however, very strong-mind? ed, and delights in a life of active occnpa^o^,r m*X?aS?tT Phyalelau? susd Hvrgeon, , AND MARION STREETS, offen? bis professional services Co the citizens of Columbia and vicinity..
