The Confederate invasion of Lake
Erie in September, 1864, oame before
the House Committee on War Claims
recently, the owners of a couple of
yawls that were Mined, olaiming
damages from the Government. It
will be reoolleoted that some Soothern
refugees in Canada planned and organ?
ised a warlike expedition for the
forcible seizure of private steamers on
Lake Erie and using them for the
capture of the iron steamer If iohigan,
belonging to the United States Navy,
then stationed an Lake Brie, near
Johnson's Island, where about 8,000
prisoners were confined, intending by
the possession of said steamer to
obtain control of the lakes. The com?
mittee reported adversely on the
claims, holding the Government not
liable for the losses Buffered.

The members of the old Tsmmany
ring at New York have made an offer
to pay 18,000,000lato the eity treasury,
on condition of the discontinuance of
the criminal solta and the release of
Boso Tweed. The offer was made to
the District Attorney, by Mr. B. G.
Jayne, who said he came ia behslf of.
a gentleman who desired to save cer?
tain members of the Tammany ring
from imprisonment, but be refused to
furnish the name. During the con?
versation, be asserted that the gentle
mast in whose behalf he appeared
woald obtain the money from certain
members of the ring, and that be
would pay it over when guarantees
were given that the criminal proseon
tione would be abandoned.
Mexico seems to be on the verge of
a religions war, which will be some?
thing new in that country. For 800
years and more, the established reli?
gion has been undisturbed; and while
in that time sll England was rent and
torn by conflicts growing ont of reli?
gion, Mexico pursued the even tenor
of her way, faithful to the mother

gentle sway.. 'But now Protestantism
is making some headway, and the bold
front assumed by the Protestants, and
their violent attempts to propagate
their feitb, have enraged the Catho?

classes is represented to be intense.
The advocates of female suffrage
threaten thst if Congress doesn't grant
them the right to vote before the 4th
of July, 1876, they will call ?-national
convention, and invite to it all the suf?
frage-shrieking women of the whole
world. Suppose all the strong-minded
women of the world should meet in

earthquake should come along and
swallow them all up! What a heart?
