The New York Republic newspaper,
just deoeased, was started upon a sub?
scribed capital of 8500,000, and with
abase and villifioation of the South as
the leading idea. Up to the pauio
(the November election;-) in tbo Radi?
cal party, 810,000 of this subscription
was paid in, since when Norvell and
Oopeland, the managers of the con?
cern, were unable to collect another
oent. Just before the paper died, they
went to Washington and tried to raise
the wind to keep it going, but they
say that they found everybody there
so conflrmly convinced that the Radi?
cal party itself was dying, that they
wouldn't pay a dollar for medicine for
it. So when the $40,000 were ex?
hausted, the sickly bantling was put in
its ooffiu and big nails driven in the
lid. It owed $1,900 to the printers.
The office boys got even by seizing on
to the editorial chairs, inkstands, pens,
pencils, paper and everything else they
eontd lay hands on.
