T/hb Whitb League.?Radical pa? pers ?od Rfcdic?! !?!>??er* have sssdo it their special boeinesa to heap vitopera tiou npon the Louisiana organization known as the White League. Lately they have given wide circulation to the assertion that the organisation intend? ed to interfere with the Returning Board ia the discharge of its duties; that the members of the Board were personally in danger. The intention of these slanders is olearly to justify further interference on the part of the Administration with the local eflairs of the State. But these slanders have been promptly met, and the true ob? jects of the League put fairly and squarely before the world. A large meeting of the Gresoent City White League was held in New Orleans, last Tuesday night, at whioh resolutions were adopted setting forth the real in? tent of the organization, and repelling slanderous statements made by the Radical press. The resolutions are bb follows: Whereas, through the correspond? ents of a part of the Northern press, and by false aud flagitious statements in the Radical press of New Orleans, and by lying and slanderous assertions on the part of the members of the Re? turning Board, it is sought to create the belief that the Returning Board is threatened with violence in the dis? charge of its functions, and that the White League baa connived at and counselled such violence; and whereas, the real intent ef this organized mis? representation is to divert publio at? tention from the frauds aud forgeries of the Returning Board, or to furnish plausible excuse, to the Returning Board for abandoning the canvass at a point where a partial promulgation of the returns of the late election would give a Radical majority in the next State election, or to iuvite the inter? position of the Federal Executive, and under the plea of furnishing protection to the Returning Board, secure the presence and aid of Federal troops at the State House, in repeating the out? rage of 1872, and impanneling a Legis? lature not representative of the people, to the end that the present fraudulent and uprising government may be per? petuated, and Louisiana bo Btill held under Radical nubjeation, Resolved, That, infamous as are the outrages already committed and still designed to be perpetuated against the rights and liberties of tho people by the Returning Board, the White League, believiDg that the dearest in? terests of Louisiana arc involved in keeping the peace at this juncture, will continue to maintain the public order, and brands as false any asser? tion to tbe contrary, come from what son roe it may. Resolved, That the above resolutions be published in the Conservative papers of New Orleans, and that the Oonservative press of the entire coun? try is earnestly invited and urged to give the widest circulation to this our . solemn asseveration. Day before yesterday morning a family of ten emigrants, principally women and children, arrived here by the Texas and Pacific train from South Carolina, in a very destitute conditiou, without food or money. They tried to get in at many places, but nobody would pity them or take them in. They were only "a few more poor emi? grants." There they wonld have had to Btay all night had not a poor kind hearted'girl named Miss Nellie Col? lins, who belongs to the varieties, seen them aud taken compassion upon the strangers. She not only gave np her humble little room to the party, bat procured them food and provided for them to the extent of her scanty means until morning, when their case was brought to the atteotion of the Mayor and Dr. Cornelius, who provided them with a small hoaee and sent them pro? visions. "The rarity of Christian charity" was never so forcibly exem? plified than tbe heartless manner in whioh these emigrants were treated by those who ought to have thrown their doors wide open to them. [Dallas (Texas) Herald. That was rather a curious compari? son with which Senator Cameron wound up his spetch of greeting to King Kalakaua yesterday. ''Our whole people," said he, "cherish for your subjects the most friendly regard. They trust and believe that tbe rela? tions of the two countries will always be as peaceful as tho great sea that rolls between us." We admit that the Pacific is a peaceful ooeau as ooeaus go. But none of them are always quiet. There are times when even tbe Pacific ia anything bat reposing. If we mistake not, it contains in its bosom quite a number of goodly ships. It has swallowed up the rieh argosies of merchants, and for that matter tbe merchants themselves. It has paved its bottom with oostly wrecks, with lest j?TToin and precious stones, torn from the grasp of men who relied too implicitly upon its pacific nature. If our relations with the Sandwioh Islands do not prove more peaceful, the Kiug will have a stormy time of it, and perhaps regret that he ever honor? ed us with his presence. Politics in Mississippi will be unu? sually lively during the coming month. A State convention of tax-payers' is called to meet at Jackson at the same time as the State Legislature, and the latter body will be earnestly entreated to redoee the present onerous rates of taxation, as the Republican party pledged itself in its platform. Tax? payers announce that their convention is in no sense political or partisan, aud they invite Republicans and Democrats who pay taxes to take part in its deliberations. Reading matter on every page. THE Di BY J. A. SELBY. COLU Forney's Sunday Chronicle places the indebtedness of tba District of n?lnm b a at the enormous figure of 829,376, 537.69. This is ft debt of about four dollars per head on every man, woman and child that the lust census credits to the District. Of the report of the Commissioners to the President, dated December 5, 1874, the Chronicle says: "It is one of the moat extraordinary doonments ever issued from such high official source, es far as an artful ar? rangement of figures, the resort to a wholesale suppression of liabilities and an unbounded inflation is concerned." In other words, the Chronicle charges the Commissioners with falsifying re? cords to conceal rascality. The surgeons fonnd that the bullet had struck the large chignou worn by Mrs. Lindenstruth, and that this saved her life by causing the ball to glance and preventing it from entering her skull.
