calling for ballet girls for the Christ?
mas pantomime. Over 1,000 young
women applied, and, as there were but
300 wanted, 700 were compelled to go
away disappointed. Among this 700
was Mary McCanu and a oompanion,
who had oome from Hudson City,
hoping to obtain employment. Sad
and disheartened they started for
home, and, while crossing the river,
determined to end all their troubles by
leaping Into it. At the last moment,
however, Mary's companion dtew
back, but the other plungod boldly in.
Fortunately, there were those near at
hand who reecued her. Baruum heard
of the adventure, sent emissaries to
search the girls out, and now they are
both rehearsing iu the hippodrome
ballet. The reason given for the rauh
aat by Mary is very touching. 'I had
rather die than starve,' she said, 'and
I had rathor Btarve than be bad.'"
In his sermon the other Sunday,
Mr. Beeoher exclaimed: "I would
rather be a suffering man than a happy

inviting him to breakfast, and reco?
vered damage in ?1 and the amount of
the wife's funeral expenses.
