The British' War Department has
great difficulty in keeping its soldiers,
after they are enlisted, the desertions
for the' past year numbering 5,800,
equal to one-third of the reoruits. In
this country, the same difficulty is ex?
perienced, notwithstanding the in?
ducements hold out to the private to
remain in the ranks by the commuta?
tion of part of hie wages iuto a savings
fund. The London Nexcs suggests
that, "in plain words, we have reaohed
that point of political eduoation when
the notion of catching a man for our
soldier by certain promises, and re?
taining him in the service by force
when he behoves the uuderstanding
to be broken, must bo entirely
abandoned." That is to Bay, the re?
straints and hardships of military life
are becoming more and more irksome
to men, and the ranks must be filled at
an increased outlay for wages or by a
constantly declining rfuality of hu?
manity.
