BY JULIAN A. SELBY. Journalism as a Business ?Io oom mentiDg upon the failure of a newspa? per manager, the St. Loois Globe tells a plain trnth in the following words: "The business of journalism will con? tinue to be an inviting field for experi? ments to those who hove a large amount of money and a large amount of egotism. A man who, having edited a newspaper until he was forty, should suddenly annouoao himself a lawyer, would* be regarded as a fool by tbe legal profession; and yet we often beer of lawyers of forty making sudden pre? tensions to journalism. There is nu idea that the business of editing re? quires no apprenticeship; that editors come forth from law offices and col? leges fully armed for the profession, like Pallas from th? brow of Jove. It is a mistake; there is not in America, to-day, a single journalist of national reputation who has not devoted more time and more hard work to his pro? fession than, with equal fitness and application, would have made him a great lawyer or a good doctor. And yet ninety out of every hundred men you meet on the street will hesitato abont carrying a hod or making a pair of shoes, whereas ther? will probably not be one in tbe hundred who can't, according to his own judgment, edit any newspaper in tho country better than it is edited, no matter in what manner or by whom." Recently a telegraph clerk in Franco refused to transmit a meBBnge in these words, "Third epistle of John, verses 13 and 14," under the law which for? bids the transmission of despatches not written in plain language. Refe? rence to the text indicates that the despatch was merely an economy of words. Tbe text ib as follows: "I have many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee; hut I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face." The Hon. John Morrissey, of New York, will, it is rumored, be a candi? date for Sergeant-at-Arms for tbe | Forty-fourth Congress. If John sue-1 oeeds in buying the property on Crpi tol Hill for which he is negotiating a purchase, with tbe view to establish a club hoose, he will always know where to find the absentees when there is a , call of tbe House. John Frode is no mote. You pro? bably didn't know him. He lived in Western Missouri, and in entering the smoke-house of a friend to see how the hams got along, a trap-gun blow his head off. The coinage of tbe United States mint for tbe past year, it is said, was greater than for auy previous year in the history of the Government since 1852, which is good, if true.
