Lawson, Abbeville Fbenoh or German.?The students of the New York Normal College were, last week, oalled upon to vote on the question which of the languages, the German or the French, they would prefer to study thoroughly. It having been found impraotioable to reconcile the multiplicity of the studies pursued with a thorough and exhaustive study of both languages, necessary for their complete mastery, tho mode of deter? mination finally selected was by remit .Ing tho entire matter to a vote of the scholars; and lo! of the whole 1,100 students of tho College, 918 voted for the German and only 187 for the French language; the balance, forty five, were absent. The Now York Belletrisches Journal has the following remarks on the subject: "Who would have thought such a result possible ten, aye,'but five years ago? At that time Frenoh was well nigh the only foreign langnage taught at the higher educational institutions for young ladies. It was not learnt thoroughly; but a little superficial smattering was considered as indispensable to the bon ton. German wae only thought of to bo scouted and sneered at. The change ia so great and extensive a one that not only the need, the recognition of the ever increasing necessity for the German language iu the daily social and business life of the country, but unmistakably also good taste, the greater satisfaction with tbe German and its magnificent literature, must be amen? its governing principles.?Sa? vannah. (6a.,) Abend Zeitung, Oct. 21. A school-boy spelled "sob," and when asked to define it, blundered ont: "It means when a feller don't want to cry, and it bursts out itself." Another defined oomma as a "period with a tail." COLUMBIA MUSIC STORE. LyBrand & Son TAKL pleasure in calling the attention ol the public to hii examination ot ilibir STOCK or MUSICAL MERCHAN?
