BY JULIAN A. SELBY. X*skk.?Lieutenant Governor PeOD, of Louisiana, aeemR to have been as good a soldier daring the war as the South had in her ranks. Ou this point we have the testimony of Gen. Jubal A. Early, certainly a good witness. At , a recent meeting of tbe Southern His torioal Society in Richmond, Hod. R. M. T. Hunter delivered an eloquent address, in whioh he made allusion to the hard fought field of Gettysburg. At its- conclusion, General Early Baid he thought it might be appropriate for him to give a little incident connected with that battle. There was in his di? vision a Louisiana brigade which, after serving iu Jaoksou's glorious valleyi campaign, swooped down with him on Madeline, went with him to Pope's rear, and served in all the succeeding brilliant exploits until tbey went to Gettysburg. On that bloody field, ac? companied by a brigade of brave North Carolinians, they charged over the most difficult part of the position, en? tered the Federal works, bayoneted the gunners, and brought off over 100 prisoners?being only prevented from holding the ground they thus won by tuo failare of their support to come np. "The man," said General Early, "who commanded that brave regiment was Davidson Bradford Penn, who re? cently, as Lieutenant Governor of i Louisiana, endeavored to assert the \ rights of the peoplu of his State." In a recent sermon to his own con-j gregation, Spurgeon is reported to nave said: "And those of you who labor for yoor livelihood, complain of the high price of mutton, for whioh you have to pay ten cents per pound, while I offer you the Lamb of God for notbiug, and you refuse to has* it."
