COLUMBIA, S. C. T?.ara3ay Horning, September 17, '74. 'UTfcutC la TliougJit of Air. Chamber? luln'a Nomlnallon, The weight of President Grant's en? dorsement of Mr. Ohamberlain is iixown into the scale. He is quoted ?jos saying: "I know Mr. Obamberlaio. JIo would make a splendid Governor. II faopethat he will be elected." It is as?t stated under what representations ?Ibis approval was procured. It is fair ?to suppose that it was given upon a contracted view of the situation. In acXL probability, this was not fully . grasped by the President. Tho ohoioe, ta the matter was presented to him, Oil between Mr. Ohamberlain and one ?ether person. Whatever were the cir? cumstances, or whatever limitations ?ufc?ted his judgment*, wo need not in? quire farthor. The President has a right to his opinion. Porhaps he will tee-fit to ohango it, perhaps not. That lie does not reflect tho enlightened sentiment of tho country upon this point, will appear by reference to ex? tracts which we have several times ?.aojiied from the best iuformod Re? publican journals North, and which were studiously excluded from the v -party organ here. Sinoo the nomi? nation was made, some of these jour ' nils 'have returned to the subject. The New York Times, of Monday, de livers the following opinion: "Tho rosult of the long conflict in the South Carolina Republican Cou ? vantion is the nomination of ex-At 'tarney-General Ohamberlain for Go vyaccor. Moses was eaorifioed on the - altar ol expediency, and the Oham- 1 berlain faotiou profited by the sacri? fice. Bat - now an Independent Ro pablioaa'>Ckmventioo, embracing many delegates-^vho are dissatisfied with the 1 ucunj'.tion of Ohamberlain, is an n nr^.Qoed. This looks, at a distance, a little like a 'novemeut for genuine reform; but tho ways of South Carolina .-conventions are inscrutable. Oham '-.b^rluia has annouaoed his determina "iisn to undertake reform measures if elected. It is hardly worth while to .jcioniment upon either his nomination ? oT'iiiH proposed action until we know ? what the Independent Oonvention has jJoue. Bat it is safe to predict that South Carolina will insure good go? vernment only when she has put away Jfsvm her all mm xoho have been con ?soaded wifli (he past dishonest adminis .tralions," 3Che New York Tribune, of same xiAte,'takoa this view: ?"The South Carolina Republican Oonvention has at last found a bidder. Mr. D. H. Ohamberlain, carpet-bagger ?nd ooiruptionist, has carried off the prize. The Convention oould have t*ono ope worse thing?re-nominated Moses?-but it refrained, probably be esuHo Moses had no money. The scene at the last session weis on a par with the nomination?absolutely disgrace? ful. The Convention re-assembles thin morning, to adopt a platform. The trouble seems eutirely unnecessary. The tioket they have nominated will ran most consistently without any principles There is a chance, so etiot that it is hardly worth mention iag, that Ohamberlain is not so black x? he has been paiuted. Every true Irieud of South Carolina and of the vtolared race will pray that he may prove himself to bo so. If so, a dark . .o.eas, blanker than Egyptian, will settle ?uipou the State." The ?pringfield Republican?the .jaoMt popular, conservative and able journal of New England?in advance at the nomination, had a kind word Sat Mr. Chamberlain, but regarded &im as keeping "scoundrelly com? pany." The pregnant fact is al? iud od to, that the Democrats and X?<M!96r?fttiys tai-payere of South Ca? rolina have announced their readiness lit. support any man the Rupublioans ?rhoose to pat in nomination, provided &-aly that he bears a good character Aud has no ring antecedents. But it snys Unit man is not Mr. Chamberlain. It appears that the Republican warned Ur. C. of tho conseqacnco3 which 2zavo now come to pass. It s iy<?: 'Of Mr. Chamberlain, we have boon 76ry reluctant to think evil. lie ?seines of good Massachusetts stock. Ha received his 'lit' iu the schools of Worcester. Yale decorated him with 5?.er highest honors. Few meu begin life with moro fluttering omens. It ws* au ill day for t his brilliant young wfenj&t? wheu he packed his trunks for 'South 'Carolina. The Scott ring at ante, took him up, as the Tweed ring iook up Mr. A.Oukoy Hall?for pre? cisely tho same reasons. Whether he ?karod in the prooeeds of thoir thefts -or not, he became identified with thorn in the public mind from the mo meut when be aooupted the position of their legal adviser. Three years ngo, qre pointed out to him the danger into which he was running?the certain soa-sequeuoes of beiug caught iu such ?fioandrelly company. He disregarded 4he warning. Wuat we then foresaw Jb now coming to pass " A Te-uoion of Gordou's Brigade has Won arranged to take place in Atlanta on Wednesday, October 21, during the ?State Fair. Addresses am expeoted from Gau. A. R Liwtou, who organ? ized this brigade uud oarried it to the .YAiioy of Virginia, 6,100 strong. Wit* Me tho Convicted 1 ' Jadge Mackey is the ablest advocate of that portion of the Republican party which has just nominated Mr. Chum berlaio for tho office of Governor. For this party he does not claim that it is even on trial. He says that "it has already beou tried und'convicted," bot makes a motion for a new trial, and asks that the judgment of the country may bo suspended. Yut he states no valid grounds upon which tho demand is based, and presents thoouudidute of his choice before it, surrounded by an army of ring supporters, old party haoke, official and legislative briguuds, who are associated in tho publio miud with tho ruin and disgrace of the State. The country can find no good reason to withhold or delay the execution of its just judgment in auy uppeal or statements mude, or indication of future reforming polioy indicated. The Union Herald, of yesterday, glances buck ut theoondition of things in that party two years ago. There wus then ??need of much reform," but it says that it was still a matter of choice, not of necessity. Now it is a matter both of choice und neoessity," Iu other words, its turpi? tude was not thou so well known; it had not thou boon so sternly condemn? ed or go terribly denounced by the American people. It had tho choice of going on in sin, or uf behaving bat? ter. It ohose to go ou in sin. Now it is confronted by a necessity imposed upon it from without. But it is a fal? lacy and a sophism to pretcud that that necessity in fairly met by the election of a Govornor, whose history, pnblio acts and present atlitudo und surroundings constitute tho strongest possible denial of reform in adminis? tration. Tho condemnation of tho whole people of this country cannot be roaonciied with the compact array of tho worst men hero to couteud for a new lease of political powor. Its pro? tests are recorded against these men. These protests mean that they must "step down and out." Republicanism itsulf is neither on trial nor con? demned. But its spurious representa? tives arc. When true representative men oome forward, with candidates who Bymbolize not corruption but re? form, not jobbery but a broad, liberal aud honest policy, the country will regard tbom with favor, and welcome them to the honorable task which they undertake. <-???-? IHass Meeting in Cliurlt-alon. We referred yesterday to tho mass meeting to bo held iu Sumter next Sa? turday, to inaugurate the independent Republican movement. But Charles toil has anticipated Sumter. This evening, a meeting will be held iu the city, which promises to bo euormous. We have seen a despatch which gives these par? ticulars, und adds, that "things uro ripening fast." < * ???
